The Ministry of Interior is preparing to hold a meeting soon with the Saudi side for the first time in a decade, with the aim of agreeing on securing the border strip with it.
The Ministry’s official spokesman, Brigadier General Miqdad Miri, said in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: The process of securing the border has made important strides, especially since the country’s internal security is greatly affected by border security, which called on the Ministry to take a set of measures to secure the border strip, especially with Syria, which is 618 kilometers long. Noting that part of the Syrian border is controlled by the Syrian security forces, and the other is controlled by armed groups, which prompted the ministry to establish a concrete wall from the north with a length of 170 kilometers.
He added that the measures in this regard also included moving concrete block factories near the border crossings to reduce transportation costs, in addition to constructing a 50-kilometre-long wall from the south, in addition to extending, for the first time, a 400-kilometre optical cable to transmit images to the command headquarters and connect more than 320 points. He stressed that there are ongoing meetings with the Iranian and Syrian sides, but that a meeting will soon be held, for the first time in nearly a decade, between the leadership of the Iraqi border forces and its Saudi counterpart to conclude agreements on securing the border strip with the Saudi side.
