The Green Iraq Observatory reported on Wednesday that water scarcity and air pollution are the most prominent environmental challenges facing Iraq.
Observatory member Omar Abdel Latif said in a statement received by Al-Maalouma, “The Iraqi environment has been suffering greatly in recent years, as the most prominent challenge is the scarcity of water, which has led to the migration of many citizens of the marshes and farmers.”
He added, "The water shortage has greatly affected the planting of perennial trees that soften the atmosphere and protect against dust storms, which led to more than 100 storms during the previous drought years, causing dangerous infections among citizens, especially asthma patients."
He called on responsible authorities to "urge citizens to rationalize water consumption, provide modern sprinklers to farmers to use in irrigating crops, and install treatment plants in government departments that dump their waste, especially hazardous waste, into river water, such as the Ministry of Health."
Abdul Latif explained that the environment also suffers from air pollution, as Baghdad is the second most polluted capital in the world after Chad, according to 2021 statistics. End 25
