    Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: In a statement that sparked controversy, Iraqi communist politician Raed Fahmi confirmed that involvement in corruption no longer constitutes an obstacle for politicians to win electoral votes and hold the highest positions.
    Fahmy pointed to global examples such as Donald Trump in the United States, Silvio Berlusconi in Italy, and Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, where these politicians were able to gain or retain power despite their involvement in major corruption scandals.
    Fahmy said in his statement: “It seems that involvement in corruption in its various forms is no longer an obstacle for a politician to win electoral votes and hold the highest positions. Trump, Berlusconi, and Netanyahu are examples of this, while in Iraq, a politician proven to be corrupt is received warmly by the public.”
    The Iraqi situation
    This phenomenon is not limited to the West only, but is clearly evident in Iraq.
    Some Iraqi politicians involved in major corruption cases still enjoy broad public support, and are warmly received at public events.
    This behavior reflects a deeper problem in Iraqi political culture, where the democratic system lacks effective mechanisms to hold the corrupt accountable.”
    Iraqi academic Qasim Hussein says, “Raed Fahmi’s statements reflect a painful reality in the Iraqi political system, where democracy has become dependent on the power of money and influence. Corruption here is not just a legal issue, but rather part of the political and social structure.”
    Activist Sari Hussein says: “The warmth with which corrupt politicians are received shows a disconnect between the political class and the people. Many people have lost confidence in the ability of institutions to achieve justice, and therefore, they rally around their leaders, regardless of their corruption, out of sectarian or tribal loyalty.”
    Passive role
    There is the negative role played by some media in promoting this phenomenon.
    The media in Iraq, in many cases, turns into a tool in the hands of the corrupt, as it is used to promote them and polish their image instead of holding them accountable and exposing their corruption.
    No real democracy
    Analyzes believe that there is no true democracy with the dominance of money power, while true reform requires serious efforts to fight corruption by strengthening state institutions, strengthening the judicial system, and activating the role of civil society in monitoring and holding the corrupt accountable.
    Raed Fahmi's statements highlight the rampant corruption crisis in the Iraqi political system, and raise serious questions about the future of democracy in the country.
