    Baghdad today - Sulaymaniyah
Aram Merwan, professor of economics at Halabja University, confirmed today, Thursday (June 20, 2024), that tourism in the Kurdistan region needs a new government plan.
Merwan said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the numbers announced by the Tourism Authority regarding the numbers entering the cities of the region annually, especially on holidays and occasions, are very huge numbers, and we can benefit from them to the maximum extent possible.”
He added, "The Kurdistan region has a stunning nature, and there are dozens of undiscovered tourist sites," adding, "Unfortunately, these sites lack services that encourage families to come to them, especially in the summer."
He pointed out that "the ideal solution is to exploit the tourism file, develop tourist sites in the region, and raise the economy and financial liquidity by referring the resorts and discovered sites to investment."
The expert in economic and academic affairs, Othman Karim, revealed on Tuesday (June 18, 2024) details of the impact of tourists on the recovery of the Kurdistan region’s markets.
Karim told "Baghdad Today", "According to the figures of the Tourism Authority in the region, approximately 300,000 tourists entered the various cities of the region during the past days."
He added, "With an account inventory, if we assume that the least person will spend 200,000 dinars as an average for hotel expenses, transportation, restaurants, etc., then we are facing billions of dinars, which is financial liquidity that will enter the Kurdistan region, and it is in dire need of it."
He pointed out that "the arrival of tourists has brought joy to the hearts of market owners. During the seasons of the arrival of tourists, they sell what compensates for the depression of other seasons. For example, tourists buy nuts and sweets in large quantities, unlike the citizens of the region who only buy what they need."
He stated that "during the current Eid, with average estimates, financial liquidity has entered Kurdistan amounting to 150 billion dinars, which is a large amount that contributes to the recovery of the markets in a very significant way."
With the arrival of spring every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors from various Iraqi governorates flock to the Kurdistan region of Iraq, which reflects a great revitalization of the movement of markets and various economic and service sectors in the four governorates of the region, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Dohuk, and Halabja.
Resorts, tourist and mountain sites, as well as city and town centers, are crowded with visitors coming from all Iraqi governorates, as the regions of the region in general are characterized by their cool atmosphere and green mountainous nature in this season.
Visitors go to tourist, entertainment and heritage landmarks and sites in major cities, especially popular markets, public parks, major commercial complexes and theme parks, while others go to resorts, parks and mountain resorts, which are distinguished by their waterfalls, springs and dense vegetation.
