    Alsumaria News - Security

The Iraqi government accused the United Nations, today, Wednesday, of relying on "reports and organizations with known agendas" in its reports on human rights and death sentences in Iraq, which the report of the UN special rapporteurs had previously described as "crimes against humanity and based on confessions tainted by torture."

Justice Minister Khaled Shawani said in a press conference attended by Alsumaria correspondent, "The accusations of the special rapporteurs have no basis in truth, and what was reported did not take into account the circumstances that [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] is going through as the first line of defense and the fight against terrorism," noting that "international reports and unofficial foreign organizations are the focus of the Iraqi government, and we will submit a professional and objective report as a kind of response to the accusations that we face."

For his part, Zaidan Al-Atwani, advisor to the Prime Minister, said, "The Iraqi government emphasizes positive engagement with the special rapporteurs and civil society organizations," noting that "we are directly following up and dealing with all information and investigating human rights violators if found."

He stressed that "what is regrettable is that the special rapporteurs relied on allegations, press reports and unsound organizations with known goals and agendas," indicating that "[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] has reservations about what was indicated in the statement and that the procedures related to penalties and implementation were carried out in accordance with the law."

He pointed out that "the anti-terrorism law is a law to criminalize crimes against humanity and its existence is to combat everything that is criminalized by law," considering that "the death penalty is taken against criminals regardless of their affiliations."

It stressed: "We are concerned about the large number of executions publicly reported since 2016, totaling nearly 400, including 30 executions this year, and the explicit political commitment to continue carrying out death sentences, in complete disregard of the reported irregularities in the administration of justice, the cases of enforced disappearances and confessions tainted by torture that led to these unfair sentences."

The UN quoted the rapporteurs’ reports as saying that with the official statement that there are 8,000 prisoners awaiting execution in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], when arbitrary executions are widespread and systematic, they may amount to crimes against humanity, which entails criminal responsibility for any official involved in such acts, whether directly or through acquiescence.

She continued: “We insist that most of the crimes detailed in Articles (2) and (3) of the Anti-Terrorism [url=https://www.alsumaria.tv/entity/2438734941/%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%88%D9%86 %D8%B1%D9%82%D9%85 (13) %D9%84%D8%B3%D9%86%D8%A9 2005/ar/]Law No. 13 of 2005[/url], on the basis of which people are sentenced to death, do not amount to the “most serious crimes,” which makes these executions arbitrary in nature. The alleged political use of death sentences, especially against Sunni Iraqi males, is deeply disturbing,” the rapporteurs said.
