Observers: “Sunni region” is not achievable

Political observers believe that the appearance of the term “Sunni region” on the surface time and time again and its promotion is nothing but a storm in a teacup, and that despite the inclusion of a paragraph in this regard in the Iraqi constitution of 2005, the reality of political differences between forces, parties and figures in the Sunni component areas, in addition to the rejection or lack of clarity of the external factor’s vision of this idea, places it in the basket of political conflict and nothing more, and that it is not possible to achieve on the ground.

He pointed out that “establishing a Sunni region requires the consensus of Sunni politicians, and requires external consensus and blessing, and before that, requires the approval and will of the Iraqi people. I believe that combining all of these matters is very difficult and complex, so establishing a Sunni region and talking about this issue is nothing but a ‘storm in a teacup’ compared to reality.”
“For his part, independent political analyst Omar Al-Nasser told Al-Sabah that “the higher the level of political differences within the Sunni political spectrum, the smaller the number of people supporting them, which requires finding urgent ways to reposition themselves to return them to the fold of entrenchments, which requires creating an issue that raises a media storm in order to draw the attention of the general public to secondary issues that raise the street’s confidence in politicians who have failed to put in place realistic, radical solutions that touch on the daily needs of the citizen.”
He added, “Although the issue of regions is a constitutional issue and within the limits of the law, it was naturally formulated in an appropriate form (for the Kurds only) that guarantees the cohesion of the region. It is a source of disagreement, fragmentation, and a time bomb for Arab Iraqis. Therefore, if we want to examine its most minute details, several questions will appear, including: (What will be the reaction of the regional countries to this establishment of the region?), (How will the region to be established face the internal challenges and disputes that may arise due to the conflict over its leadership?), as well as the question (What are the assurances that guarantee the Sunni street that this region will meet, provide, and achieve the desired goal of stability, development, and reconstruction?).”
Al-Nasser concluded by saying: “More important than all of this, (what is the political weight and influence of the voices calling for such a step?) which is supposed to be preceded by previous steps; the most important of which is a popular referendum with standards and constants that do not harm the national interest and the foundations that establish the pillars of the state.”
