Parliamentary efforts to return the retirement age to 63 years

called on the House of Representatives to reconsider the legal retirement age and return it to 63 years, for reasons including that raising the legal age will provide the government with two additional years that can be invested effectively, in addition to being a global decision adopted by many countries to benefit from the expertise of employees.
Member of the Finance Committee Jamal Koujar said in a special statement to “Al-Sabah”: The previous amendment to the retirement law that set the age at 61 years aimed to create 300,000 new job opportunities, but with the absence of new appointments in the budget for the current and next years, keeping the current retirement age may lead to a shortage in the staff, in addition to stopping deletions and creations, as this situation raises questions about how to fill the vacancies that will arise due to the retirement of employees without appointing replacements for them. He explained that
despite the existence of disguised unemployment, many potential retirees have great expertise that cannot be easily dispensed with, pointing out that signatures were collected from a number of representatives to support this proposal.
Koger added that retirees’ salaries are already included in the budget, so keeping employees on the job longer will not create any additional burden on the budget, stressing that going into retirement reduces pressure on it, but at the same time it may lead to the loss of important energies that the government can benefit from in the end, in addition to being a double-edged sword as it has positives and negatives, which requires careful study before making any decision.
