    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday (August 13, 2024), the leader of the Victory Coalition, Aqil Al-Radini, revealed three scenarios for deciding the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, while stressing that there is a reproach on the framework for not deciding .
Al-Radini said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The Sunni-Sunni differences regarding the nomination of a consensus candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives are still ongoing, in light of all parties' adherence to their opinions until now, despite holding two sessions previously in an attempt to resolve the issue, but they did not lead to a decisive result, and the third round of voting was postponed for reasons known to public opinion."
He added, "The presidency of the House of Representatives is a right for the Sunni component, and there was an opportunity two days ago to proceed with an option centered on some Sunni parties giving up a ministry in order for another party to obtain the presidency of the House of Representatives, but it did not happen," stressing that "leaving things without change created discontent in the street."
He pointed out that "there are three scenarios currently on the table, the first of which is an agreement by one of the candidates, whether Al-Mashhadani or Al-Issawi, to withdraw in order to go with the other candidate and go to the third round of voting and leave the choice to the members of the House of Representatives, or the arrangement of the Sunni forces through mutual concessions regarding giving a ministry to one party in order for the other party to go with its candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives."
Al-Radini said, "The commotion in the street about the framework wanting to monopolize the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives is incorrect. What is happening is a Sunni-Sunni dispute. There is indeed a rebuke to the framework for not making a decision, but it does not want to interfere and leaves the matter to the Sunni forces for the sake of the balance on which the political process was built after 2003 and it is committed to it."
Yesterday, Monday (August 12, 2024), the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, announced an agreement to nominate a candidate for the presidency of parliament in exchange for giving up one of the ministries.
Al-Maliki said in a televised speech regarding the parliament presidency crisis, which was followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the legislative institution has been affected by a problem and is now managed by the first deputy and must be stabilized with a full presidency."
He added, "There is a controversy raised about the desire of the largest component to control the presidency of parliament, and this is not true," stressing that "the Coordination Framework is keen on completing the political process and ending the crisis of the presidency of parliament."
Al-Maliki continued: "We agreed as political parties to present a candidate from one of the Sunni parties in exchange for giving up one of the ministries to the other party," stressing that "the Coordination Framework took the initiative more than once to find a consensus among the Sunni forces regarding the presidency of parliament."
On November 14, 2023, the Federal Court announced the termination of Mohammed al-Halbousi’s membership as deputy and speaker of parliament, while the Sunni blocs have not yet succeeded in deciding the position due to disagreements and lack of consensus, as parliament failed in four attempts to elect a replacement for al-Halbousi in light of Sunni fragmentation and the insistence of the Coordination Framework on a consensus candidate.
