Turkish incursion expands into Iraqi territory.. Parliament is “displeased” and the government’s position is “ambiguous”
Day after day, the Turkish military operations in northern Iraq are taking a dangerous turn, turning from chasing PKK elements in border villages to bombing and assassination operations inside city centers in Dohuk and Sulaymaniyah, in a development that parliamentarians considered a “dangerous indicator.” While they called on the government to intervene urgently to prevent the Turkish advance, they stressed that parliament will organize hosting and interrogating officials regarding these developments.
Amer Al-Fayez, a member of the parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee, said, “The Turkish aggression against Iraq’s sovereignty has developed significantly and dangerously and has begun to target areas inside cities and assassinate figures inside residential neighborhoods, especially in Sulaymaniyah, and this is a dangerous indicator.”
Al-Fayez added that “the recent Turkish escalation requires urgent intervention by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to take practical steps and measures to deter Ankara from such operations that threaten Iraq’s security and stability and violate sovereignty, and not to be satisfied with statements of condemnation.”
He pointed out that "the House of Representatives will resume its sessions in the coming few days, and will play a role regarding the escalation of Turkish operations inside Iraq, and will work to direct parliamentary questions as well as various hosting to push the relevant government agencies to take real steps to stop this escalating aggression."
Turkey continues its military operations in northern Iraq on a daily basis, as it carried out several bombing operations in the provinces of Dohuk and Sulaymaniyah, as well as in southern Kurdistan, during the past two days.
The head of the Metro Center for Defending Journalists' Rights, Rahman Gharib, confirmed that Turkish forces entered the Kurdistan Region by about 50 kilometers, and their drones are targeting innocent citizens in Kurdistan and journalists as well. A
Turkish drone targeted a vehicle belonging to the "Jetr" company that was carrying two female journalists on the road linking Sayed Sadiq and Halabja districts, who had gone to film a television program, while the journalistic circles in Sulaymaniyah condemned the targeting of members of the journalistic family, stressing the need to prevent the recurrence of such cases.
For his part, member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Mohammed Al-Shammari, stressed that “the recent Turkish escalation against Iraqi sovereignty by targeting residential cities and carrying out assassinations by Turkish aircraft inside Iraqi cities is a dangerous development that must not be ignored.”
Al-Shammari explained that “the Iraqi government’s silence towards this escalating aggression will give Turkey an incentive to continue its aggression against Iraq’s sovereignty and threaten its security, so there must be a firm position by the government to deter Turkey from its aggressive operations and withdraw all its occupying forces from Iraqi territory.”
He added that “the Iraqi Council of Representatives is following all developments taking place in the Kurdistan Region and the escalation of Turkish aggression against Iraq’s sovereignty there and will take parliamentary decisions that will be binding on the government to deal with this file away from any compliments and pressures.”
Despite the extensive Turkish military movements, the federal authorities in Baghdad and the local authorities in the Kurdistan Region are still silent about them, with the exception of the Federal National Security Council’s announcement last July of its rejection of the Turkish incursion and its demand that Ankara observe the principles of good neighborliness, while no statement has been issued by Baghdad or Erbil regarding the new operations, which can be interpreted as a kind of acceptance in Baghdad and an inability in Erbil to stop the Turkish movements.
It is noteworthy that the Turkish operations have been ongoing for months, causing significant material and human losses, while the Turkish side says that its operations in the Kurdistan Region aim to create a buffer zone free of the Kurdistan Workers' Party and at a depth of 40 kilometers, indicating that the military operations taking place were coordinated and in a joint operations room with the Iraqi security forces, and are part of a set of memoranda of understanding and agreements signed between Al-Sudani and Erdogan during his visit to Iraq months ago.
In addition, security researcher Ahmed Al-Sharifi said during a conversation that "the Turkish escalation in Sulaymaniyah and Dohuk is normal in light of Baghdad not taking any real positions to deter Ankara from these aggressive military operations, and keeping things as they are will push Ankara to further escalate in the coming period."
Al-Sharifi explains that "the Turkish aggression has evolved from targeting border villages to assassinations and shelling inside city centers and residential neighborhoods, and this is a dangerous indicator that must be addressed, and any Turkish military operations must be stopped, as this shelling may push the Turkish army to penetrate deep into residential cities."
He stressed that "the Iraqi government is required to take urgent international action to stop Turkey's aggression against Iraq and work to withdraw the illegal Turkish forces from Iraqi territory, as these forces threaten Iraqi national security and pose a threat to Iraq's sovereignty."
Since the beginning of 2021, Turkey has significantly escalated its operations in Iraq, and carried out several airdrops, in addition to establishing security points after its ground forces entered various areas of Dohuk and Nineveh, in addition to announcing the establishment of a new military base on Iraqi territory, with the aim of pursuing elements of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, especially in Sinjar District in Nineveh.
Turkish forces deployed in a coordinated manner in the villages of Amadiyah District in Dohuk on June 29, and Turkish forces also bombed the Derluk district in the governorate, intensively.
