Shafaq News/ As Iran prepares for potential escalation in the regional situation, including a confrontation with Israel, it is intensifying its efforts to strengthen its borders, with particular concern about Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based across the border in Iraq, whom it accuses of being linked to Tel Aviv.
The British website "Amwaj" stated in a report translated by Shafaq News Agency that in light of the possibility of a potential escalation of the intelligence war with Israel, and the possibility of an open war with repercussions within its borders, Iran is now exploiting a clear opportunity to pursue its Kurdish opponents.
After the report pointed out that the Revolutionary Guards launched a barrage of missiles and drones on Erbil, claiming to target a Mossad base, an attack that sparked criticism from the Kurdish authorities, and then Iran executed four members of the leftist Kurdish Komala party, it said that the Iranian authorities have always demanded the dismantling of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based across the border.
    Iranian opposition weapon
The report continued by saying that this Iranian movement has escalated since the signing of a security agreement with Iraq in 2023, while the Kurdistan Regional Government has been under increasing pressure from the federal government in Baghdad to disarm Iranian opposition groups and transfer them to specific areas in the region.
The report quoted Komala's Vice President, Fariba Mohammadi, as saying, "We have been informed since last year that we need to move as part of the agreement between Iran and Iraq, but the pressure has increased in recent weeks."
After the report pointed out that Komala is located near Sulaymaniyah, and that its three bases have been subjected to missile attacks by Iran over the past years, Mohammadi was quoted as saying that the agreement between Tehran, Baghdad, and the Kurdistan Regional Government, which had been stalled for a long time, to transfer Komala had now been reached, and that the group had reluctantly accepted it.
However, the report said it remains unclear when the group's fighters and their families will be transferred to designated camps.
According to Mohammadi, Tehran is afraid of the gamble it is taking in the region, referring to the escalating confrontation between the Iranian-led “axis of resistance” and Israel, and is intensifying pressure on its Kurdish opponents as part of a strategy to strengthen its borders.
The report quoted Mohammadi as saying that the wider region is tense after the October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel and the renewed hostility in which Iran is a party, considering that Israel’s killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran “embarrassed Iran and showed that it is in deep trouble.”
"When the Islamic Republic cannot fight its enemies, it usually attacks the Kurds because we are the easiest target," Mohammadi continued.
    Iranian pressures through Baghdad
The report quoted Khalil Naderi, a spokesman for the Kurdistan Freedom Party based in Erbil, as saying that his party had also been subjected to similar pressure from Iran through the Iraqi authorities, noting that given the difficult economic and political circumstances in which the Kurdistan Regional Government finds itself, the Freedom Party had done its utmost to meet the demands.
“We did what was asked of us, such as closing our training bases, staying away from the border area, surrendering our heavy weapons, and avoiding public appearances with guns,” Naderi said, accusing Tehran of making unreasonable demands whose ultimate goal is to dismantle all Kurdish opposition parties, including those that follow peaceful resistance.
Naderi continued that the Iranians "want to put these parties in camps outside the control of the Kurdistan Regional Government, or from time to time they provide a list of names of people from these parties, to be handed over to them as criminals."
Naderi pointed out that Iran's main problem is with the Kurds inside Iran, not with these small parties.
    Strict guidelines
Regarding the Kurdistan Free Life Party, which is allied with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, the report said that it appears that it has not witnessed any real change during the past year, as members of the group are present in the mountainous region on the border with Iran in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, and this party operates noticeably outside the scope of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the dominant party in the governorate.
The report indicated that the Iranian Kurdistan Democratic Party, alongside Komala, deployed several Peshmerga units directly on the border, opposite the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan, but the Kurdish authorities in the region forced the fighters to dismantle their bases and retreat to a deep valley inside Erbil Governorate.
The report quoted informed sources as saying that local authorities also informed opposition groups that any cross-border operation against Iranian security forces would not be tolerated.
The report noted that Iranian Kurdish opposition groups clearly say that they will respect the complexities of the Kurdistan Region and refrain from doing anything that might undermine their hosts, despite their opposition to the Iranian-Iraqi security agreement.
    Nechirvan Barzani
“Over the past three decades, the IRGC has been unsuccessful in carrying out assassination campaigns, cross-border operations, artillery, drones and missiles to dislodge its Kurdish opponents,” the report said, adding that “in this ongoing confrontation, one person who has dealt with the Iranians on a regular basis is Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.”
The report continued, "Hours before his assassination in northern Tehran, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was seen sitting next to Barzani at the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian."
The report added that just six months ago, Tehran was accusing the Kurdish authorities of hosting Mossad bases in Erbil and had fired ballistic missiles at a villa in the city, not far from Barzani's residence and the US base at the airport.
“With decades of experience dealing with the highest levels of the Islamic Republic and Western governments, Barzani, a skilled politician turned diplomat, could have whispered in Haniyeh’s ear that in order to survive in this volatile region, the Palestinian leader must not get too close to any center of power,” the report said.
    "Forward Defense"
The report concluded that Iran, over four decades, has spent enormous resources building a regional alliance network represented by the “Axis of Resistance,” which is part of a comprehensive “forward defense” strategy aimed at confronting its enemies on their own soil, adding that the recent move against Kurdish opposition groups is part of that strategy.
The report continued, "While Tehran has achieved limited success so far, it is too early to judge the ultimate outcome of its efforts to subdue Kurdish opposition groups."
The report concluded by saying, "It seems that the fates of Iran's Kurdish opponents are intertwined with the broader regional tension between Iran and the axis of resistance on the one hand, and Israel and its Western backers on the other."
The report quoted an informed official in the Kurdish opposition as saying that in this broader confrontation between the two sides, the Kurds, whether they like it or not, are in the Western camp, and that Iran could launch another strike on targets in the Kurdistan Region.
The report quoted the Kurdish opposition source as saying, "Tehran succeeded in brutally crushing the opposition during the 2022 protests, and by taking recent measures against opposition groups, it is preparing for potential unrest within its borders in the future."
Referring to the Iranian Supreme Leader’s warnings of harsh revenge for Haniyeh’s killing, the Kurdish opposition source concluded by saying, “Khamenei will not dare to strike Israel hard, but if he does, he knows that war could break out, and that in order to fight the external enemy, he needs internal unity.”
