Turkish invasion expands.. Government position “absent” on occupation of Iraqi lands
Day after day, Turkish forces continue their incursion into dozens of villages and cities in the Kurdistan Region, with the escalation of the military operation they are waging in the region. However, what is strange in this file is the absence of a government position towards this incursion, and only denunciation.
The Turkish attacks have caused civilian casualties and the displacement of many families in the targeted areas, in addition to the occupation of large areas within Iraqi territory.
Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee Ali Nima Al-Bandawi says, “Iraq absolutely rejects any encroachment on its sovereignty and lands, and what Turkey is doing in Dohuk and all northern cities is not with the knowledge and approval of the Iraqi government, and this is what it has confirmed more than once.” Al
-Bandawi added, “The Iraqi government’s silence on what the Turkish forces are doing in northern Iraq is strange and raises many question marks, and the government must take firm positions towards what the Turkish forces are doing, as this silence is a greater incentive for Ankara to expand and penetrate further into Iraq.”
He pointed out that "the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee will work to host security, military and governmental leaders to find out the reasons for this silence and how to deal with these attacks, which should not be subject to official silence from Iraq."
For his part, Iraqi parliament member Alaa Al-Haidari described the Turkish incursion into Iraqi territory as a soft occupation, stressing that Turkey is carrying out ongoing violations based on illegal grounds.
Al-Haidari said, “The Turkish army is invading Iraqi territory under the pretext of pursuing the Kurdistan Workers’ Party without any legal justification.”
He added, “Turkey is exploiting the situation in the region to implement its efforts to occupy a large part of Iraqi territory in northern Iraq,” calling on the federal government to “reconsider the agreements signed by Baghdad with Ankara regarding operations on the borders of the two countries before and after 2003.”
He continued, “The parliament will have a position, decisions and recommendations regarding the dangerous Turkish incursion into Iraqi territory.”
In turn, the member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Mahmoud Khoshnaw, revealed that the Turkish occupation was able to penetrate more than 100 sites with a depth of 40 kilometers and reached the town of Amadiya, which is only 20 kilometers from the center of Dohuk.
Khoshnaw said that “some local political parties are in harmony with the Turkish movements, which has weakened efforts to expel the Turkish occupation from the region.”
He also pointed out that “this escalation poses a great danger to Iraq,” calling on the Council of Representatives to “take serious decisions and follow up on government moves to reject this incursion.”
Earlier on Tuesday, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced that it had targeted 20 sites belonging to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in the Kurdistan Region. The
ministry stated in a brief statement that “20 sites belonging to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, including headquarters of leaders, were targeted through airstrikes.”
According to a statement by the ministry, the targets of the raids were distributed in the areas of "Metina", "Zab", "Kara", "Hakurk", "Qandil" and "Asos". The
Turkish Defense Ministry claimed that its operations come within the framework of "ensuring border security", and based on the principle of the right to self-defense according to Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
Two days ago, the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, headed by MP Karim Aliwi Al-Muhammadawi, Chairman of the Committee, hosted Qasim Al-Araji, National Security Advisor, and his accompanying delegation, in the presence of committee members, to discuss the security situation throughout Iraq, especially the Turkish incursion into some areas of the country.
During the hosting, which was held at the committee headquarters, the Turkish incursion and its multiple bombings of some Iraqi areas were discussed.
The committee decided to continue holding meetings and hosting officials and concerned parties regarding the file of repeated attacks on Iraqi territory by some neighboring countries in order to end this file in a final manner that preserves the security and safety of citizens and the sovereignty of the country.
The committee recommended that there be a unified national decision from all spectrums of Iraqi politicians who make decisions against all violations and attacks on Iraqi territory by all neighboring countries.
