Spanish company implements Basra-Shalamcheh railway

The Ministry of Transport is close to concluding a contract to implement the Baghdad-Shalamcheh railway line project with the Spanish company De Mathia, while it is preparing to open more than one railway line at the end of this month.
The Director General of the General Railway Company, Jabbar Aliwi Lahees, told Al-Sabah: His ministry is in the process of signing the contract with the Spanish company (De Mathia) after obtaining the approval of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, to refer the project to the Spanish company and start implementing it within specific timetables, noting that the line linking Iraq and Iran will be 36 kilometers long, which will allow for shortening the travel time and will be safer for travelers, in addition to the fact that it will contribute to reducing travel costs between the two countries.
He added that Iran has undertaken the demining operations along a 16-kilometer stretch as part of the implementation of this project, while the distance that Iraq must demin from is 18 kilometers, stressing that the line will contribute to transporting more than three million passengers annually. Lahees explained that during the past months, full completion rates have been achieved for some railway sector projects, including the (Dura-Refinery) railway line at 100 percent and the completion of the rehabilitation of the (Baghdad-Ramadi) railway line, and it is hoped that passenger and freight trains will operate by the end of this September.
He added that the works also include the full completion of the Haditha-Al-Qaim railway line, and work is underway to build the last railway bridge between Ramadi and Haditha. When this bridge is completed, trains will run from Baghdad to the city of Al-Qaim to transport passengers and goods. He pointed out that the Sawa-Hijama railway line has exceeded 98 percent completion and will be opened at the end of this September.
