    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Washington-based security and political researcher Nizar Haidar confirmed today, Tuesday, October 8, 2024, that Iraq faces major challenges in confronting any potential Zionist attack.
Haider told Baghdad Today, "All experts indicate that Iraq does not have sufficient defensive means to confront any security escalation that may occur in the region."
He pointed out that "the official spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces confirmed in a previous statement that the necessary measures were taken to defend the country, but he added (and the rest is up to God), which reflects the weakness of the defensive situation."
He pointed out that "the missiles and drones that Iran launched against Tel Aviv on two previous occasions, Iraq was unable to intercept them or protect its airspace, but rather the United States of America intervened and shot down a number of them through its air defenses deployed on Iraqi territory, and he considered that Iraq stood by and watched this clear violation of its sovereignty."
He added that "Iraq's security and military capabilities are still under American control, as Washington controls information and defense systems, which increases the difficulty of Iraq's ability to repel any Zionist aggression."
In this context, Haider explained that "Iraq, with the help of the international coalition, carried out 137 joint operations against terrorism in various regions during the first six months of this year."
Haidar asked: "If Iraq is able to confront the security challenges on its own, why does it carry out operations in cooperation with the international coalition?", stressing the need for "Iraq to prove that it no longer needs the international coalition and is able to dispense with its services."
These statements come amid escalating security tensions in the region, which calls for a rapid response from Iraq to enhance its defensive capabilities and achieve independence in confronting future challenges.
On September 26, 2024, MP Yasser Iskandar, a member of the Parliamentary Security Committee, revealed 4 important stages in developing two of Iraq’s most important defensive weapons.
Iskandar said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Baghdad is proceeding with the strategy of developing the Air Force and Air Defense weapons within 4 stages that take into consideration the necessary needs as defensive weapons that secure the airspace and provide the possibility of confronting any risks, whether internal or external."
He added, "Several important countries in the arms manufacturing file have expressed their interaction with the step of providing Baghdad with advanced air defense systems, and the recent contracts with Korea are one of the paths adopted by the government in order to establish an air defense system with a high capacity for monitoring and direct confrontation."
Iskandar pointed out that "the process of developing weapons in Iraq is not easy in light of the complexities and pressures that take different forms, stressing that "Baghdad is proceeding to enhance its defensive capabilities in a way that enhances its internal security, which secures an important message that it will not tolerate any aggression or assault."
Iraq recently contracted with a South Korean company to purchase a ballistic air and missile defense system, as the South Korean company "LIG Nex One" said that it won a deal under which the Korean-made air and ballistic missile defense system will be exported to Iraq
With this, Iraq becomes the third country in the Middle East to purchase the air and ballistic missile defense system after the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
