    Economy News - Baghdad
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment, Jassim Al-Falahi, confirmed on Sunday that the infrastructure of the capital, Baghdad, was established to accommodate four million people, but the population has reached nine million people due to population growth, urban expansion, and the increase in industrial activities.
Al Falahi pointed out, during his speech at a workshop on the environment, that four decades of wars, security and political instability, in addition to economic challenges and the fight against terrorism, have led to serious repercussions on the infrastructure.
Al-Falahi stated that the meeting, which brought together representatives of the ministries, comes within the framework of confronting the rising pollution indicators in Baghdad, under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani. A committee was formed headed by the technical advisor to the ministry, Ammar Atta, and with the membership of representatives of the Baghdad Municipality and the Ministries of Electricity and Oil, to submit the necessary recommendations to the Council of Ministers.
Al Falahi explained that the aim of the meeting is to determine the responsibilities of the regulatory authorities and the polluting authorities, stressing that there will be no tolerance for any activity that negatively affects the health of citizens.
He pointed out that the Ministry of Environment, according to the law, is the body responsible for monitoring polluting activities, and these activities must commit to treating pollution, especially those that have obtained environmental approvals.
Al-Falahi also pointed out that pollution in Baghdad has reached dangerous levels due to non-compliance with environmental laws and procedures, which requires a serious stance from everyone.
He noted that increased pollution rates lead to respiratory diseases and asthma, due to the accumulation of gases and smoke near the Earth's surface.
He warned against the random burning of waste, pointing out that these practices lead to harmful reactions, especially in light of the use of poor fuel with a high percentage of sulfur in power plants.
Al Falahi called for the need to find realistic solutions to the challenges facing the environmental sector, stressing that everyone bears responsibility in this regard.
Every now and then, the smell of sulfur and fog dominates the atmosphere of the capital, Baghdad, as residents of the cities of central and eastern Iraq complain of the spread of thick smoke that covers the sky for days.
Local sources say that this phenomenon is the result of sanitary landfill operations at the Rashid camp site south of the capital. Citizens have appealed to the relevant government agencies to intervene to address the gas emissions resulting from the burning of waste in the area, as smoke clouds cover large areas north of Baghdad, reaching Diyala Governorate and the Kurdistan Region.
Residents are demanding urgent solutions to avoid serious smoke-related diseases.
