Shafaq News/ The government committee formed to investigate air pollution in the capital, Baghdad, announced on Sunday the results of its investigations and recommended the necessity of preventing "scavengers" to confront the growing crisis.
The head of the interim committee to investigate environmental pollution formed by the Council of Ministers, Ammar Atta, said in a speech during a workshop attended by a Shafaq News Agency correspondent that the pollutants came out from their sources, which makes controlling them difficult. He pointed out that the beginning of last October witnessed the spread of bad smells in northern Baghdad, which led to many citizens being sensitive, increasing cases of suffocation, and many people being admitted to hospitals, especially due to respiratory and heart diseases.
Atta explained that the Ministry of Environment has begun investigating and finding appropriate solutions to the crisis, as a report has been prepared that includes a set of recommendations for the medium and long term.
The most important recommendations were related to stopping the random burning of waste in unsanitary cemeteries and preventing the entry of "scavengers" into those areas, with the need for security forces to control them.
Scavengers are people who search through trash or waste for items that can be reused or sold.
The recommendations also included, according to Atta, controlling activities that do not have environmental approvals, in addition to addressing the activities that exceed the environmental documents but have expanded the scope of their activities illegally.
He pointed out that the Cabinet's recommendations included replacing heavy fuel used in plants, which may take a year or a year and a half to achieve.
Atta warned that the current state of pollution in Baghdad may worsen in the coming days due to the increase in waste, stressing the need to take effective measures to activate environmental reports and control emissions from factories to reduce them as much as possible and improve air quality in the capital.
A foul odor and hazy smoke dominate the atmosphere of the capital, Baghdad, as residents of cities in central and eastern Iraq complain of the spread of thick smoke covering the sky for days.
Local sources say that this phenomenon is the result of sanitary landfill operations at the Rashid camp site south of the capital. Citizens have appealed to the relevant government agencies to intervene to address the gas emissions resulting from the burning of waste in the area, as smoke clouds cover large areas north of Baghdad, reaching Diyala Governorate and the Kurdistan Region.
Residents are demanding urgent solutions to avoid serious smoke-related diseases.
