"The reference" indicates the seriousness of the situation... and the political forces "shuffle the cards"
After a long absence of political commentary by the supreme authority, it issued a warning statement against the proliferation of weapons, foreign interference, and mismanagement of the state. However, the political forces followed it up with several supportive statements, which observers saw as an “attempt to confuse the cards,” considering the authority’s recent speech as evidence of the seriousness of the situation, the government’s inability to address it, and the failure of all authorities.
Political researcher Mujasha’ Al-Tamimi said, during an interview with “Al-Alam Al-Jadeed”, that “the statement of the authority was clear in identifying the many serious negatives in the government from foreign interference as well as corruption and the continued loose use of weapons, and the statements of support issued by the political forces are an attempt to confuse the cards on the Iraqi street.”
Al-Tamimi added, “The issuance of the Marja’iya statement at this time revealed the seriousness of the situation in Iraq on the domestic and regional levels, and confirmed the existence of a government inability to confront these challenges. This is the responsibility of the political forces forming and participating in this government, as the government is the product of political blocs and parties that the Marja’iya has refused to receive any of its representatives for years.”
He added, “The statement of the authority will have political consequences, especially at the electoral level, as this matter will reduce the chances of the current ruling forces. The authority has confirmed and revealed their failure and failure more than once, and we expect more severe positions from the authority during the next stage, due to the seriousness of the situation at various levels.”
Yesterday, the highest religious authority in Najaf, Ali al-Sistani, received the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and head of its mission in Iraq (UNAMI), Mohammed al-Hassan, and the accompanying delegation. According to a statement from al-Sistani’s office, he called on Iraqis to “learn from the experiences they have gone through and do their utmost to overcome their failures and work hard to achieve a better future for their country in which everyone enjoys security, stability, progress and prosperity.”
The statement also indicated that “this cannot be achieved without preparing scientific and practical plans to manage the country based on the principle of efficiency and integrity in assuming positions of responsibility, preventing foreign interference in all its forms, enforcing the rule of law, restricting weapons to the state, and combating corruption at all levels,” adding: “But it seems that the Iraqis have a long way to go until they achieve this, may God help them.”
As soon as Sistani’s statement was issued, most of the political forces issued statements supporting what was stated in it, the first of which was the Coordination Framework, which expressed its welcome for the statement and its full commitment to translating its directives into “practical steps that reflect the aspirations of our people.”
The Victory Coalition also called in its statement for “adopting the directives of Mr. Sistani as a document of principles through which the work and performance of political forces are organized.” The Azm Alliance then expressed its full support for what Sistani issued regarding managing the country with the principles of competence, integrity, and the rule of law.
The Euphrates Current parliamentary bloc (led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani) issued a statement indicating that the meeting between Mr. Sistani and the representative of the UN Secretary-General reflects the supreme authority’s keenness to enhance the role of the United Nations in supporting Iraq and its stability. On its side, the Islamic Dawa Party announced its full commitment to the directives contained in the statement of Sistani’s office, considering it “a clear and guiding roadmap for building a state of institutions according to standards of efficiency and integrity.”
The head of the Hikma Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, also issued a statement in which he stressed that Sistani’s vision represents “a comprehensive roadmap that reflects the vision of the paternal authority for the benefit of Iraq and its people.” The latest was the Sovereignty Alliance, which found in Sistani’s statement “a recipe for achieving the values of stability, justice and balance that inevitably serve the interests of the people, state institutions and the political system.”
For his part, political science professor Khaled Al-Ardawi explained, during an interview with “Al-Alam Al-Jadeed”, that “the statement of the authority is a clear and explicit declaration of the failure and failure of the authorities as well as the political parties in implementing the aspirations of the Iraqi people and the directives of the authority that it has been calling for for years, and every time the blocs and parties announce their support for it, but without implementing anything from it until now.”
Al-Aradawi points out that “the statement of the authority is clear that there is corruption, there is loose weapons, there is foreign interference, and there are also positions that are given to unprofessional and incompetent figures. This confirms that the authority is following all the big and small issues that occur in Iraq, and even the external events that have repercussions on Iraq and the Iraqis.”
He stresses that “the announcement by some political forces of their support for the statement of the religious authority is an attempt to evade responsibility, even though they are the ones primarily concerned with all the important points contained in the statement of the religious authority. This statement will have political and popular consequences for the government as well as the political forces, and this statement has revealed the weaknesses and failures that Iraq is going through.”
