Baghdad is the capital of Arab tourism

I am not exaggerating when I say that Iraq has unique tourism advantages that are not found in all countries of the world. It is rare to find a country that contains all types of tourism (historical, heritage, natural, religious). Such a unique advantage can create an ideal economic integration if it is invested properly. Investment here requires many details related to social, security, political, and other aspects. Tourism should have received exceptional attention in order for us to benefit from its economic returns, which may exceed oil revenues, which still represent the main resource and most prominent financier of the Iraqi economy.
In July 2016, UNESCO announced the inclusion of the Iraqi marshes on the World Heritage List. We were extremely happy with this great event, which came after tremendous and strenuous efforts that ultimately succeeded in this inclusion. However, the question that arose later was: What has changed in the reality of the marshes after that decision?
In my estimation, it is still the same after 8 years of its transformation from local to global, as the tourist does not find all the requirements he needs, and therefore the lack of such requirements leads to a state of reluctance, especially in the summer.
My words in this regard come in light of the state of anticipation and waiting for the naming of our beloved capital, Baghdad, as the capital of Arab tourism for the year 2025, which is a great event if it is achieved, and all indications indicate that it will be achieved, for Baghdad to be the capital of Arab tourism means that a bright light will be shed on tourism and antiquities in the land of the Tigris and Euphrates Valley, and the Arabs and the world will discover the uniqueness of Baghdad and its sister cities in Iraq, in a field that some Arab media have long sought to obscure and cover up, but because the sun cannot be hidden by a sieve, the Arabs and after them the entire world will stand dazzled and stunned before what they will see of a giant history and tourist attractions that cannot be easily encompassed.
In light of the map of tourist sites, there are 17 tourist sites offered for investment, while there are more than 36 thousand announced archaeological sites, and there are more than 4 thousand other sites that have not been announced yet, which means that we are talking about more than 40 thousand archaeological sites, covering the entire map of Iraq.
But the question here is, what do we need to develop tourism in the country, and make it an important factor in shaping the gross domestic product, and take the selection of Baghdad as the capital of Arab tourism as a starting point towards achieving this goal?
Certainly, the task is not easy, but it is not impossible, especially in light of the stability that Iraq is witnessing, with a clear influx of foreign investors in various fields. I say that we need to rehabilitate many archaeological sites that have been exposed to extinction or vandalism, in addition to increasing the excavation movement for undiscovered sites, and increasing the pace of diplomatic efforts to return smuggled or borrowed antiquities. There is also an urgent and necessary need to develop, organize and manage tourism, which contributes to the sustainability and development of tourism. The reference in this aspect takes us to the necessity of granting more facilities to investors in the tourism sector, to help implement, finance and manage projects that attract tourism in various governorates.
We can also talk about the possibility of establishing archaeological museums in all governorates, considering that there is no governorate that does not have archaeological sites, and a file of this magnitude requires management with a high level of capabilities. This naturally requires enhancing and developing the technical and administrative capabilities of workers in the archaeological and tourism sector, and encouraging study in colleges and institutes specialized in this field.
We remain awaiting the decision to name our Baghdad the capital of Arab tourism for the year 2025 and all years.
