    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday, November 7, 2024, the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, discussed with the head of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, Atwan al-Atwani, the general situation in the country, and its political, security and economic developments.
A statement by the Parliamentary Media Department, received by "Baghdad Today", stated that Al-Atwani "reviewed during the meeting the circumstances of the financial situation in the country, and the challenges facing the national economy in light of the excessive reliance on oil to finance the state's general budget."
According to the statement, Al-Atwani presented to Al-Maliki "a full briefing on the role of the Finance Committee in following up on the implementation of the three-year budget items and monitoring government spending," stressing "the initiation of a new philosophy for managing the financial sector, centered around diversifying sources of income and activating productive sectors, in addition to reconsidering the collection of revenues and evaluating government performance in this context."
Al-Atwani also reviewed the package of laws that the Finance Committee intends to legislate, especially those related to maximizing non-oil revenues, or developing the banking sector, in a way that contributes to achieving sustainable development for the country.
Al-Atwani summarized the problems of the service reality in Baghdad Governorate in general, and specifically its service-deprived areas, and emphasized the importance of giving them priority in implementing service projects.
In turn, Al-Maliki praised "the efforts of the Chairman of the Finance Committee to maximize non-oil revenues, stressing the importance of moving quickly to activate various productive sectors, in a way that enhances the state's revenues and makes it capable of confronting any changes that may occur in global oil prices."
Al-Maliki reiterated his "emphasis on the importance of paying attention to the various areas of Baghdad, as the capital represents the face of the country, indicating that it needs a service revolution, especially in its deprived areas, located east of the canal, which the former regime deprived of the most basic services."
The leader of the State of Law Coalition warned that "it is time to do justice to the areas east of the canal and compensate its people for the deprivation they suffered as a result of the policies of the sectarian dictatorial regime."
