Baghdad/Al-Masala: Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidency has sparked a wave of division in Iraq between official positions welcoming the results, and factional positions fearing the consequences of this victory on Iraq’s future and its foreign relations.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani offered an official congratulation to Trump, stressing in a brief message “Iraq’s readiness for joint cooperation that serves the stability of the region,” while reactions to this statement varied within political and popular circles. Sources spoke about the importance of building balanced relations with the new US administration, but other opinions considered this step “a compromise on Iraq’s interests and sovereignty,” as they put it.
At a time when political forces allied with Iran expressed warning positions about the impact of Trump’s return, Ibrahim Al-Sakini, a member of the “State of Law” coalition, denounced Al-Sudani’s congratulations and considered it “a concession to external pressures.”
This view has found wide resonance in pro-Iran circles, with sources stating that “congratulating Trump means preparing to open a new door of economic and political pressure.”
On the other hand, the head of the Iraqi Center for Political Thought, Ihsan Al-Shammari, said that “with Trump’s victory, there is no room for maneuver for Iran’s allies in Iraq.” Al-Shammari added in a post on “X” that “Trump will be more strict in dealing with forces close to Tehran,” and he expected that Iraq will face a critical stage that requires taking decisive decisions to avoid escalation with the US administration, especially in light of the ongoing disagreements over the presence of US forces and tensions related to economic sanctions.
Opinions on the Iraqi street were also mixed, with an Iraqi citizen on “X”, Ahmed Hashem, expressing his concern about the impact of Trump’s victory on the shaky Iraqi economy, saying: “If Trump returns with the policy of sanctions, the Iraqi citizen will pay the highest price, and the economic situation will remain in the wind.”
Others saw that Trump's return might be an opportunity to get rid of the multiple positions in Iraq, as one activist tweeted that "Trump's victory could be a challenge to build a clear collective position."
Analyses indicate that the armed factions may be in a state of readiness for any new developments, as some analysts have indicated the possibility of an escalation in targeting operations against American bases in Iraq if Trump's hardline policy towards them continues, and this tension may be translated into a mutual escalation that may plunge Iraq into a new security spiral.
