The Iraqi-Syrian border has witnessed new fortifications, with the authorities closing 9 of the most dangerous border breaches with concrete walls.
This measure comes as part of efforts to enhance security on the border between the two countries, which has long suffered from smuggling operations and the activities of armed organizations.
These gaps are vital areas used by smugglers and terrorist elements to pass individuals and illegal materials between the two sides.
The construction of concrete walls aims to reduce security risks and better control the borders, contributing to greater stability in the border area.
The move was part of a broader strategy by which authorities seek to tighten control over the long border with Syria and crack down on illegal operations that threaten Iraqi national security.
Member of the Parliamentary Security Committee, Yass Iskandar, said, “Securing the Iraqi-Syrian borders is a priority in the Iraqi national security curriculum due to the multiple challenges and the presence of areas where terrorist cells are active in Syria, in addition to what the Al-Hol camp represents as a time bomb in the Middle East.”
He added, "Securing the Syrian borders took on multiple dimensions according to a systematic strategy, including concrete walls that contributed to closing 9 of the most dangerous gaps in the borders, as they are complex terrains and constituted important points in the events of June 2014 and what followed."
He pointed out that "Iraq's experience in securing the borders has been enhanced with modern frameworks, especially thermal cameras, and the establishment of a wide network of communications that can maneuver and take all measures according to field needs."
The terrorist organization ISIS mentions starting an attack in June 2014 by storming the Syrian border towards Nineveh Island and from there to Mosul before taking control of it at that time.
