The Ministry of Migration and Displacement revealed, on Friday, its steps to limit illegal immigration, while setting a date for the release of the final report of the Supreme National Committee for Migration Control.
Undersecretary of the Ministry of Immigration, Karim Al-Nouri, said, “The ministry has taken several steps to limit illegal immigration, including drafting a law currently in coordination with the relevant authorities in the State Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Prime Minister’s Office, and some organizations to help enact a law to limit illegal immigration.” He pointed out that “the ministry will work to complete this law and submit it to the Council of Ministers for voting, and then send it to the House of Representatives.”
He explained that “this law will determine the relevant authorities, the steps, mechanisms and tasks of each authority, and the penalties that the state will take in the event that some people smuggle migrants.”
He pointed out that “the National Supreme Committee for Combating Illegal Immigration was formed, headed by the Minister of Migration and Displacement, and approximately 68 members, including advisors, general managers, and officials responsible for this issue,” noting that “the committee held its fourth meeting and took several steps, including awareness and rehabilitation programs with publications on the ministries’ websites and publications that will be published in garages and billboards in the Baghdad Municipality and the governorates.”
Al-Nouri added that “the Ministry of Higher Education has circulated a letter to the concerned parties, including 40 government university bodies and institutions, and has created a special group for this campaign, which bears the slogan (Your dignity is in your country, no to illegal immigration),” noting that “there are procedures that the Ministry of Immigration is working on according to the plan approved by the Council of Ministers, which is the national plan to reduce illegal immigration and is being followed up with the ministries, and internal and external steps have been taken, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Intelligence Service, and the Ministry of Interior have been tasked with providing the Ministry with reports, studies, information, and statistics on Iraqis who have been subjected to illegal immigration.”
Al-Nouri stated that “sub-teams were formed in each region to work on the axes of eliminating unemployment, combating smugglers, and combating those who encourage smuggling,” pointing to “field visits to universities and approximately 200 workshops in all ministries, including governorates and directorates.”
He stressed that “the committee submits reports to the Council of Ministers, and the Prime Minister is the one who supervises this committee, and in December there will be a special conference to launch the committee’s final report for the year 2024,” noting that “Bayt Al-Hikma has taken approximately 24 international and national studies and research papers that will be presented at the end of the month at an international national conference that will be attended by figures from abroad to present their contributions to this conference sponsored by Bayt Al-Hikma under the name No to Illegal Immigration, and we have taken all of these measures during this year.”
