Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced that its minister and military leaders arrived today, Saturday, to the western Nineveh operations sector in Sinjar on the Syrian border.
In a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, she said that Defense Minister Thabet Mohammed Saeed Al-Abbasi, accompanied by the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army for Operations and Joint Operations and the Commander of the Land Forces, arrived today to the West Nineveh Operations Sector in Sinjar.
The ministry explained that the visit was to review the security situation within the sector and inspect the border strip between Iraq and Syria.
Earlier, Al-Abbasi confirmed the readiness of the armed and security forces to protect the Iraqi borders from any potential threats, and explained that the Iraqi army, with all its formations and types, is working to secure Iraq alongside the rest of the security services.
He also stressed that the Iraqi forces will not allow any terrorist to infiltrate the country.
These statements come at a "sensitive" time, as security tensions are escalating in the Syrian areas adjacent to the Iraqi border, especially with the advance of the armed opposition in the city of Aleppo.
The opposition has managed to take control of several strategic locations in the city, raising concerns about Iraqi border security.
Also, Major General Yahya Rasool, the spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, confirmed that the borders with Syria are fully secured, pointing out that the border forces are equipped with the latest weapons and equipment, including drones and thermal cameras.
He added that any attempts to cross the border would be met with a strong response, and that intelligence services continue to monitor "terrorist movements" on the border.
