In conjunction with the military developments in Syria, the Iraqi military command confirmed the intensification of intelligence efforts on the border, and said that it had “completely closed the border.”
The majority of the Syrian city of Aleppo fell under the control of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham and its allied factions, two days after a surprise attack launched by those factions on areas controlled by the regime in the north and northwest of the country.
In accordance with these developments, the Chief of Staff of the Army, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah, and Lieutenant General Qais Al-Muhammadawi, Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, held an expanded security meeting today, Saturday, at the headquarters of the Land Forces Command, in the presence of the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army for Operations, the Commander of the Land Forces, the Head of the Engineering Support Department at the Ministry of Defense, and a number of commanders and officers.
During this meeting, according to a military statement, the openness of the security forces was discussed, as well as the evaluation of the sectors and intelligence efforts, in addition to emphasizing the importance of intensifying intelligence efforts on the Iraqi borders shared with all neighboring countries, and coordination in the field of joint security work, confronting challenges, and developing and reviewing plans according to priorities.
The attendees also discussed “the latest operations carried out by our heroic security forces and the successful strikes directed at the leaders and members of the defeated ISIS terrorist gangs within a number of areas of responsibility, in addition to the continuation of offensive action and maintaining the momentum of security efforts,” according to the statement.
The statement added: "The readiness of the security forces and building their capabilities for the various types and formations of the security forces were also discussed."
The meeting also witnessed a series of discussions by the attendees with the aim of enhancing security and stability in various regions of the country.
In contrast, the Deputy Commander of Joint Operations in Iraq, Lieutenant General Qais Al-Muhammadawi, confirmed today, Saturday, that “the security forces of all kinds are capable of protecting Iraq and are ready for any challenge, and that the Iraqi borders are completely closed.”
The military commander indicated in press statements that the security forces have made great strides on the security level and the situation is now different from what it was.
Al-Muhammadawi stressed that "the operations command is committed to the orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to protect Iraq."
Events in northern Syria have accelerated over the past few hours, as the Syrian armed factions continued their advance in the areas of Aleppo and Idlib for the third day, while the Syrian army acknowledged its withdrawal with the Kurdish armed factions seizing Aleppo International Airport.
Earlier on Saturday, two Iraqi factions suggested the possibility of the so-called “Axis of Resistance” participating in the events in Syria.
Today, Saturday, November 30, 2024, the armed factions announced the launch of Operation “Dawn of Freedom” with the aim of seizing areas controlled by the Syrian regime forces in the eastern countryside of Aleppo.
She said that the aim of the operation is to "liberate the areas usurped by the Assad regime and its sectarian Iranian militias, and to liberate the Syrians from injustice and crime," as she put it.
In contrast, the Coordination Committee of the Resistance in Iraq intends to hold an important meeting in the coming hours to make decisions regarding the events in Syria.
This is the first time that armed factions have entered Aleppo since the regime of President Bashar al-Assad regained full control over the city in 2016, while Iraq fears that the geography of events there will expand to reach the border areas.
