Parliamentary Health Committee calls for forming a committee concerned with environmental reform

The Parliamentary Health and Environment Committee and specialists called for the formation of a committee or center for environmental reform to address pollution resulting from various activities and encourage the principle of (reward instead of fines). The
head of the committee, Majid Shankali, told Al-Sabah: Environmental pollution is caused by various activities resulting from the oil and electricity sectors, citizens, waste burning, and others.
He added that this matter requires the formation of an environmental reform committee that is responsible for following up on environmental laws, adhering to them, and holding accountable those responsible for the pollution accumulated over the past decades.
He pointed out the importance of all ministries participating in this committee to adhere to environmental determinants and adjust their laws according to each party, to eliminate pollution and create a clean environment stemming from commitment to environmental standards.
Shankali pointed out that reports on environmental pollutants are submitted to the executive authorities for the purpose of taking the necessary action and addressing the defect, as the parliamentary committee is a supervisory body.
For her part, the Head of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the College of Science at Al-Mustansiriya University, Dr. Israa Qahtan, said in a statement to Al-Sabah: The current circumstances require the combined efforts of state institutions, civil society organizations, religious figures and the media to spread environmental awareness and provide advice on not being extravagant and preserving trees, the environment and water.
She added that the government has two axes: the first is to support environmentally friendly devices and rely on clean energy, and the other is to care for agriculture, especially green belts and trees, identifying their type and following up on their irrigation within cities. Qahtan stressed the need to establish a specialized center to address pollution and climate, due to its importance in conducting studies and preparing specialized scientific reports that are presented to decision-makers to develop a strategy to control and distribute resources and reduce emissions through the shortest and fastest environmentally friendly methods.
She noted the importance of focusing on adopting the idea of (reward instead of fine), such as allocating a sum of money or reducing taxes or professional fees and announcing commercial activities or homes committed to preserving the environmental reality, such as collecting water bottles and other waste that can be recycled, protecting rivers and reducing pollution rates.
She pointed out that it is necessary to motivate and encourage citizens to preserve the environment by holding awareness workshops in coordination with academics and specialists, with rewarding the distinguished by evaluating the employee’s daily behavior and transferring his experience to the home represented by reducing and rationalizing aspects of life, most notably lighting, water, food, and throwing waste in its place, in addition to using things according to need and avoiding waste and extravagance, in addition to motivating and encouraging the planting of trees that require small amounts of water and that release appropriate amounts of oxygen.
