    Economy News - Baghdad
The Directorate of Residence Affairs at the Ministry of Interior clarified, on Saturday, the details of correcting the status of foreign workers of only three nationalities, noting that 5,322 foreigners have benefited from the decision to correct their legal status since last August, while confirming the continuation of inspection campaigns to control illegal foreign workers in Baghdad and the governorates.
The Director General of the Directorate, Major General Hussein Al-Yassari, said in a statement reported by the official news agency, and reviewed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "the Council of Ministers issued Resolution No. 24.832, related to adapting the legal status of foreign workers of Syrian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationalities, who entered Iraq through the Kurdistan Region and are currently residing in the rest of the Iraqi governorates, with the exception of the governorates of the region."
Al-Yassari added, “This decision aims to give foreign workers the opportunity to correct their legal status by reviewing the Iraqi sponsor for whom the foreign worker works. An electronic form is filled out via the Ur platform, then sent to the Residency Directorate. After that, they go to the (single window) in the Residency Directorate, which includes all relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (with its two branches, the Department of Labor, Training and Social Security), the National Intelligence Service, in addition to the relevant Residency Department, to complete the procedures in this window to facilitate procedures for foreigners and sponsors.”
He pointed out that "the sponsor or foreign worker must pay a legal fee of 4,720,000 Iraqi dinars, and after paying the fees, the foreign worker is granted a (work permit) from the Ministry of Labor, and then the Residence Directorate grants a one-year residence, renewable as long as the situation is still justified, and in the event of renewing the residence, the fee is less than the first renewal, reaching 2,000,000 dinars."
He stressed that "the decision grants the opportunity to correct the illegal status of the foreign worker to the legal status, with a work period of only 30 days (not a month) starting from August 25, 2024."
He added, "Anyone who does not comply with the law during this period will be subject to legal measures stipulated in Residence Law No. 76 of 2017, which include imposing a fine and deporting him from Iraq, with a ban on returning for two years."
He stated, "There are ongoing inspection campaigns in Baghdad and the governorates, with an operations room in the Residence Directorate of each governorate to follow up on the implementation of this decision."
He pointed out that, "the last tally of visitors during the previous period, which began last August, was that 5,322 foreigners had benefited from this opportunity. This service was previously available to all nationalities, but now it is limited to Syrian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationalities."
