Today, Sunday, Parliament intends to hold its 18th session of its second legislative term.
The session’s agenda includes discussing and voting on paragraphs of a number of important laws, most notably: the draft law amending the second amendment to the General Amnesty Law No. (27) of 2016, voting on the proposed amendment to the Personal Status Law (188) of 1959, and the draft law to return real estate to its owners covered by some decisions of the Revolutionary Command Council (dissolved).
The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee pointed out to Abi that the House of Representatives included the (general amnesty) law on the agenda of its session scheduled for today. Committee member Ali Al-Baldawi said, “The law was included several times before, but it was postponed due to disagreements related to the land law, which usually accompanies it on the agenda, in addition to other laws such as the Personal Status Law and the Mobilization Law.”
He explained that "the law initially enjoys the support of political forces and the House of Representatives, but it faces strong objections related to its articles related to the release of criminals."
He said, "We are in favor of approving the general amnesty law, provided that it does not include any clauses that include the release of those involved in crimes of shedding the people's blood or financial corruption."
Al-Baldawi explained that "voting on the law depends primarily on the convictions of the representatives and political blocs," stressing "the importance of ensuring that the amnesty is limited to the innocent only."
He pointed out that "there is an urgent need to release innocent people from prisons, but it is illogical or unacceptable for the amnesty to include the killers of the people or the thieves of public money."
