    Today, Monday, the Ministry of Agriculture determined Iraq's needs for eggs and chicken meat, stressing that local production of animal products does not fully cover the market's needs, while revealing a plan to support the poultry sector and encourage investment in it.
    The ministry's spokesman, Mohammed Abdul-Ridha Al-Khuza'i, said in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency, which was followed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "the ministry is working to determine the country's needs for eggs and chicken meat based on the individual's annual need for these products, as the individual's consumption is estimated at 220 eggs annually and 22 kilograms of chicken meat, and based on that, it requires about 10 billion eggs and more than 900 thousand tons of chicken meat according to the current population." 
    Al-Khazai explained that "the current egg production amounts to 6.5 billion eggs, while the production of chicken meat amounts to 350 thousand tons," stressing that "the ministry has developed a plan to encourage investment in the poultry sector."
    He pointed out that "there are many requests to establish projects in the poultry sector, some of which have been granted approvals, while others are still under construction."
     Al-Khazai added, "The cost of producing a carton of eggs (12 layers) does not exceed 40 thousand dinars, while the cost of producing one kilogram of chicken meat ranges between 2000 and 2250 dinars."
    He pointed out that "some breeders face increased production costs as a result of not achieving the required production capacity, due to diseases or mismanagement, which leads to higher costs compared to other breeders."
    The spokesman stressed that "the poultry sector is one of the promising sectors, and that the ministry strongly supports it by protecting the local product, by raising customs duties to 70% on imported eggs, 50% on whole slaughtered chicken, and 25% on cuts."
    He pointed out that "there is a problem with the high fuel prices and the poor electrical equipment, but the prices of feed are still acceptable, which allows breeders to achieve good profits from their projects."
