    Economy News - Baghdad
Today, Monday, the Iraq Development Fund launched the first phase of the "Edopa" project to build 600 schools to improve the educational infrastructure.
Today, the Board of Directors of the Iraq Development Fund held a meeting headed by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, where important decisions were taken regarding the “Edopa” project to build schools.
A statement issued by Al-Sudani's office, received by "Al-Eqtisad News", stated that during the meeting, the Executive Director of the Iraq Development Fund was authorized to sign contracts to implement 600 schools as a first phase within the project.
The EDOPA project aims to improve the educational infrastructure in Iraq by building new schools that contribute to strengthening the educational system in various governorates.
Iraq needs 8,578 new schools to meet the needs of all educational levels, as the number of students is about 10 million, distributed across 16,000 schools, including 1,560 schools that are in danger of collapse, or are made of mud or caravans.
In addition, 800 schools annually need to be rehabilitated or built again, as many schools suffer from overcrowding, which affects the quality of education.
In response to these challenges, the Iraq Development Fund launched the “Edopa” investment program for building schools, which aims to build 400 schools through private sector investment, where the investor undertakes the construction and maintenance of schools in return for a lucrative rent for a period of no less than 10 years. The program focuses on dilapidated, caravan, and mud schools in all governorates not organized in a region.
