     Baghdad Today - Diyala
Diyala Governor Adnan Al-Shammari revealed, today, Tuesday (December 3, 2024), that smuggling in the governorate decreased by 90% during the year 2024.
Al-Shammari said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Smuggling in all its forms is harmful to the economy and a gateway to corruption and the transmission of diseases and epidemics, but the largest part is materials unfit for consumption, whether food or medicine, in addition to prohibited materials."
He added, "Smuggling in Diyala has declined by up to 90% during 2024, and what is rumored that smuggling is still continuing with great momentum is inaccurate, but rather the opposite, through three main measures (strengthening controls, activating intelligence efforts to track smuggling networks and overthrow some of them, and taking measures to cut off the roads used for smuggling), all of which are factors that contributed to reducing its danger."
He pointed out that "smuggling has declined but has not ended, and the security services are continuing to implement effective measures to end this phenomenon, which has negative repercussions in terms of creating problems, stressing that the smuggling file is being followed up by the security leadership, which is achieving accomplishments from time to time."
The Security Committee of Diyala Provincial Council said on Thursday (September 12, 2024) that the three-axis strategy reduced smuggling by 80% within 16 months in the province.
Committee member Aws Ibrahim explained in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Smuggling was a complex problem in the Diyala security scene and it is a crime with direct economic and security consequences, especially since the smuggled materials are prohibited."
He added, "The security services have actually adopted a 3-pronged strategy during the past 16 months, which consists of controlling the land routes, strengthening the role of checkpoints, and ending the "Naseemiya" file, referring to the agricultural roads that are used to pass smuggled goods and materials between regions."
Ibrahim pointed out that "smuggling has decreased by more than 80%, which is a very positive thing that will enhance the security dimension in Diyala and ensure that smuggled materials, including medicines and other goods, do not flow in."
