    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Director of the Iraqi Center for Strategic Studies, Ghazi Faisal, revealed today, Monday (December 2, 2024), the impact of the events in Aleppo in Syria on the security situation in Iraq, noting that "the possibility of repeating the ISIS scenario in 2014 has become impossible in light of the American military presence in Iraq."
Faisal confirmed to Baghdad Today that "the spread of the Syrian opposition spark towards Iraq will push the international coalition forces to fight terrorism to intervene to protect Iraq."
He added, "The American bases in Syria, in addition to Iraq, are still present in Ain al-Assad, Harir and other important areas, and will be responsible for confronting any developments that threaten Iraqi security, such as the re-emergence of ISIS."
He explained that "in the event of threats similar to those that Iraq witnessed in 2014, American forces will carry out defensive operations in coordination with the joint Iraqi forces to strike ISIS sites in areas such as the Hamrin Mountains, the outskirts of Kirkuk, the western desert, and the outskirts of Mosul."
Faisal pointed out that "the United States plays a major role in ensuring its strategic interests in the region, and that it is closely following the events in Syria."
He continued, "The US State Department's statements about the events in Aleppo, which stated that 'the matter does not concern them', confirm that Washington is not part of the Syrian conflict, despite Turkey's prominent role in northwestern Syria and the deployment of the Syrian National Army supported by Ankara."
Faisal concluded by saying: “Despite the potential repercussions of the Aleppo events on the internal Iraqi situation, the American presence in Iraq prevents any military or security collapse, which makes a repetition of the ISIS scenario in 2014 unlikely, regardless of the security event in Syria and other countries in the region.”
The 2014 scenario will not be repeated
Political researcher Ali Al-Baydar confirmed that what happened in 2014 will not be repeated, as the events taking place in Syria are far from the Iraqi borders.
Al-Baydar told Baghdad Today: “The organizations fighting there are non-expansionist organizations, and they differ from the idea of ISIS. They are only interested in the internal Syrian affair, and thus this prevents them from reaching areas outside the Syrian borders.”
He added, "Despite the seriousness of the situation in Syria, and the widespread spread of the conflict with the militants controlling Aleppo province, while they are preparing to control other areas of the country, I categorically rule out the danger moving to the Iraqi arena as happened in 2014, despite the presence of warnings confirming this, and for several reasons."
He pointed out that "the stability of the political situation in Iraq is sufficient to support any security plan, unlike the crisis and the state of suffocation that it was witnessing at the time, in addition to the high readiness enjoyed by the Iraqi security forces and their ability to confront challenges, unlike their situation 10 years ago."
He explained that "the Iraqi-Syrian border is controlled by a security barrier that is technically and technically difficult to penetrate, after the borders had been open between the two countries since 2003, not to mention the absence of any societal or individual incubator that would support the militants or back their movements on the ground."
