Baghdad hosts an economic conference to prevent monopoly

The Competition and Anti-Monopoly Affairs Council will hold its first conference in Baghdad at the end of this week.
The economic consultant in the council, Dr. Ikram Abdul Aziz, told Al-Sabah that the conference, which will be held under the patronage of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani in Baghdad, will be attended by representatives of the International and Arab Competition Network, as well as the heads of the competition protection and anti-monopoly bodies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arab Republic of Egypt.
She explained that the council will present the research competition awards that it announced previously for the best research that discussed competition and anti-monopoly issues, noting that the first session of the conference will be entitled "Competition Authorities and Competitive Neutrality", in which the heads of the Economy, Industry and Trade Committees, Ahmed Al-Kanani, and Investment and Development Committees in the House of Representatives, Hassan Al-Khafaji, will speak, in addition to the Ministers of Trade, Athir Al-Ghariri, and Industry and Minerals, Khaled Batal Al-Najm.
Abdelaziz pointed out that the second session will be about "Indicators for Decision Makers in Enhancing Investment Competitiveness", in which the heads of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, the Egyptian Competition Protection, the Iraqi Federation of Industries, and the head of the German Organization will speak, noting that the third session will be dedicated to companies concerned with communications and electronic cards and the Iraqi Banks Association.
Abdelaziz explained that this conference will be a bright and new point in the history of Iraq's economic paths, as this institution is formed for the first time in the country with the aim of enhancing competition and preventing monopoly that serves both the producer and the consumer, by reducing costs and providing a product or service with the best features, stressing that the council is a price regulator and is concerned with all aspects related to services, output, trade, and vital facilities essential to the Iraqi economy, and cooperates with governmental and private entities to achieve the principle of fair competition and prevent monopoly.
For his part, economic expert Alaa Al-Fahd explained to Al-Sabah that holding this conference is of great importance as it is held on World Competition Day, noting that Iraq has begun working in this field by forming the Competition Council to play its role regionally, Arab and globally by participating in economic activities and applying competition standards in order to stimulate the economy and the local market to be suitable for attracting investments according to the specified international standards.
He expressed the importance of holding this conference for Iraq, as it is being held here for the first time and is a milestone, and will be of great importance in terms of shifting towards partnership and creating a suitable environment for work and investment, and adopting appropriate standards in the field of competition and preventing monopoly.
