    Economy News - Follow-up
In light of the dangerous decrease in the rates of water quotas reaching the country and the annual decline in rainfall rates in the region, the Ministry of Water Resources confirmed that Iraq has a strategic groundwater reserve ready to fill the surface water shortage, revealing that it has prepared a sustainable plan to manage it and protect it from waste.
The Director of the General Authority for Groundwater in the Ministry, Dr. Maitham Ali Khadir, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah", followed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that Iraq has a strategic groundwater reserve ready in the event of crises to fill the shortage in surface water, indicating that his department has prepared a future plan concerned with the sustainable management of groundwater, especially in desert areas that are difficult to compensate for except through rain.
He explained that the plan includes the construction of a number of water harvesting dams during the coming year after completing their studies and designs, noting that suitable sites have been selected for them, and the most appropriate methods for harvesting water in dry areas have been determined for the purpose of storing floods and enhancing groundwater, contributing to the efforts made to settle and stabilize pastoral communities in desert areas by providing drinking water for them and their livestock and for irrigating crops.
Khadir revealed that the total number of small water harvesting dams currently ready for implementation has reached 30, which will be implemented on the western and eastern sides in addition to the southern and northern deserts, in addition to the valleys of Samawah, Najaf, Ramadi and Hauran, specifying the capacity of the dams to be built in the future within them at five million to 300 million cubic meters each.
He noted that the recent rainfall in the central and southern regions cannot be utilized due to the flatness of the land, which is not suitable for building dams. Therefore, it flows into the marshlands of Al-Chibayish and Al-Hawiza, flooding them with water, in addition to the limited quantities of water released from Turkey into the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which change with the improvement of climatic conditions. He expressed his hope for the arrival of good water after the snow melts during the coming spring, which will enhance the groundwater storage in the desert areas.
