State of Law Bloc MP Firas Al-Maslamawi confirmed on Tuesday that there are many comments on the draft general amnesty law, and while he called for the involvement of the Public Prosecution in amending the law’s paragraphs, he stipulated that the law’s approval not include the dead, terrorists, corrupt people, and kidnappers.
Al-Maslamawi said, “There are comments by members of the House of Representatives on amending the general amnesty law, and there is a demand that the central committee to amend the law include the Public Prosecution.”
He pointed out that "there is a paragraph in the general amnesty law that stipulates the release of corrupt individuals in exchange for returning the money they obtained to the state treasury, and this matter is unacceptable and this paragraph must be deleted from the amnesty law."
He stressed that "there is a paragraph indicating that whoever kidnaps Iraqis and this leads to the kidnapped person being disabled, the amnesty does not include the kidnapper, and we reject reducing the crime of kidnapping to this and we want every person who has kidnapped, participated in or contributed to the kidnapping of Iraqis to not be included in the amnesty without exception."
Al-Maslamawi pointed out that “until now, the amendments and comments are under discussion, and if the amendments are agreed upon according to the submitted comments, the law will be included on the session’s agenda and voted on,” adding, “But we reject including the dead, terrorists, corrupt people, and kidnappers in the general amnesty.”
A parliamentary source had previously indicated today that the Iraqi parliament session scheduled for Tuesday would be postponed due to “disagreements.”
The source explained that the House of Representatives was scheduled to hold its session today, Tuesday, at one o'clock in the afternoon, to discuss and approve the controversial laws.
He added that a number of members of the House of Representatives left the building due to the failure to agree on a specific formula for approving the disputed laws, in addition to the failure of the House Presidency to adhere to the specified time for holding the session.
The source indicated that the Parliament Presidency is currently working on setting a date for the session, and if it is not held within an hour from now, a decision will be made to postpone it to another day.
Later, the Iraqi Parliament Presidency announced the “postponement” of the session, in a brief statement without any details.
Regarding today's session of the Iraqi parliament, the representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc, Jiay Timur, confirmed earlier that if the three controversial laws (general amnesty, personal status, and the return of real estate in Kirkuk) are not approved, they will be postponed to the next legislative session.
