Transportation: Construction of a railway around Baghdad by 2025

The Ministry of Transport intends to raise all railway lines within Baghdad and replace them with a Hawalli line extending from Yusufiyah to the Taji area to rid the capital of all conflicts of old tracks and enhance efforts to resolve traffic congestion.
The director of the ministry’s media office, Mitham Al-Safi, told Al-Sabah: “One of the ministry’s most prominent projects to be implemented next year is the establishment of a railway line around Baghdad under a consulting contract with an Italian company. This project will end the presence of old railway lines inside the capital and replace them with a new line that starts from the Al-Yusufiyah area behind Baghdad International Airport and reaches the Taji area.”
He pointed out that the latest technologies were adopted in operating and managing this line, which would increase train traffic and save time.
He explained that the railway lines inside the city of Baghdad have witnessed, during the past years, the recording of several traffic accidents with vehicles as a result of their interference with the streets and the citizens’ failure to abide by the railway restrictions and to transgress against them, despite the continued warning and removal operations by the General Railway Company and the security authorities, noting that the circular line will work to relieve traffic congestion inside the capital.
Al-Safi explained that the steps to develop the railway sector come in preparation for the launch of the Development Road project, for which the ministry has completed the initial design phase and entered the detailed design phase in preparation for presenting it to specialized international companies to compete for investment opportunities in the project in 2025, in line with the government’s vision.
He added that the ministry is working on implementing the project to rehabilitate the railway line linking Baghdad and Baiji, which is being implemented within the emergency loan program provided by the World Bank as part of the ministry's plan to provide sustainable solutions to improve the transportation network within the city of Baghdad and meet the needs of citizens with civilized and safe means of transportation.
