    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Communications announced, on Tuesday, the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the international company Vodafone to establish a new communications network in Iraq using fifth-generation technology.
The ministry said in a statement, seen by Al-Eqtisad News, that it "agreed with Vodafone International to establish a new communications network in Iraq using fifth-generation technology, wholly owned by the Iraqi government," noting that it "signed a statement of work that includes preparing the operator for launch and providing specialized expertise in key areas such as network design, commercial proposals, and business growth plans."
She added: “We signed a memorandum of understanding to continue discussions on the services that Vodafone will provide to the new operator and the most appropriate management model,” indicating that “the fifth generation is the latest generation of mobile phone technology.”
According to the statement, Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri said: “We aim to improve the quality of communications services provided to Iraqi citizens, reduce costs, increase state revenues, and introduce modern technology,” adding that “the new operator will provide job opportunities and raise the skills of young Iraqis who will manage this network.”
For his part, Vodafone's CEO of Partner Markets, Peter Dvorak, said, according to the statement, that "the establishment of a new government-owned 5G operator will bring social and economic development to Iraq," noting that "Vodafone's Partner Markets team has experience working with operators around the world."
He added: “We will be able to bring this expertise to Iraq and will provide an opportunity to train and develop the skills of young Iraqi talents,” noting that “Vodafone is a leading European and African telecommunications company providing mobile and fixed phone services to more than 330 million customers in 15 countries.”
He explained that "Vodafone's partner markets team is working to form strategic partnerships with local operators around the world."
