Observers of the Iraqi political scene described the hosting of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and three of his ministers, in a “secret” session of the House of Representatives, as “important,” in view of the tense regional situations, the latest of which is what is happening in Syria, noting that the session’s discussion of the security file, the situation on the border with Syria, and precautionary measures is extremely important.
Aref Al-Hamami, a representative of the State of Law Coalition led by Nouri Al-Maliki, said, “Among the most important points discussed during Al-Sudani’s hosting in Parliament was the security situation in light of the events in Syria and the security precautions on the borders. Parliamentary observations were also presented to the Prime Minister in this regard.”
Al-Hamami pointed out during his speech that “the discussion in the session also revolved around the oil and gas law, the budget, and the government program.”
For his part, security expert Haitham Al-Khazaali confirmed that “hosting Al-Sudani in the House of Representatives is important and came at the right time, and the security and service measures and the rates of achievement in the government program were reviewed, and that discussing the topics between Al-Sudani and the members of Parliament reflects the integration of the legislative and executive authorities.”
Al-Khazaali points out during his speech that “this hosting came at a time when Iraq is leading a diplomatic movement to calm the situation in the region, and contacts were made with Turkey and a group of countries concerned with the Syrian issue, and a summit may be held in Baghdad in this regard in the coming days.”
Al-Khazaali warns that “if the internal situation in Syria deteriorates, it may be reflected in the internal situation in Iraq, and terrorist groups in Syria may repeat the ISIS experience in 2014 in Iraq. Therefore, this file must be addressed by all political, diplomatic and even military means if necessary. Iraq may send forces to Syria to protect its national security if the situation requires it.”
In turn, political analyst Abbas Al-Jubouri believes that “hosting the Prime Minister in the House of Representatives is to clarify the security situation inside Iraq after the events in Syria and the control of armed groups over areas there, so Al-Sudani explained the security capabilities that Iraq possesses.”
“Iraqi security is linked to Syrian security as it is a neighboring country, but Iraq has put in place many good indicators that indicate its attention, through the construction of a three-meter-high fence with barbed wire, as well as an earthen berm and a three-meter-wide trench. There is also a presence of border forces and military units have been deployed to enhance security and control the borders well, and these measures are sufficient to prevent the passage of armed groups into Iraq,” he told Shafaq News Agency.
Al-Jubouri points out that “Iraq is working on two tracks at the present time, the first is securing the external borders and not allowing them to be breached, and the second track is monitoring the sleeper cells that may exploit the situation and move inside Iraq.”
The representative of the State of Law Coalition, Jawad al-Ghazali, said that “hosting the Prime Minister was successful and put the dots on the letters regarding some topics, especially the events in Syria and the budget law,” noting that “al-Sudani spoke about securing the borders and the deployment and readiness of military units from the security services and the Popular Mobilization Forces.”
Regarding sending units of the Iraqi army to Syria, Al-Azali confirmed in a previous statement that “Al-Sudani did not address this matter during the session, and that the Syrian government did not request this from Iraq, and if it requested it, Iraq would respond to it.”
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani arrived today at the House of Representatives building, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning Mohammed Tamim, and Minister of Interior Abdul Amir al-Shammari.
At the beginning of the hosting session, the House of Representatives voted that the session would be “secret” with regard to the security aspect.
In turn, Al-Sudani's office said in a statement that the Prime Minister reviewed, in the House of Representatives session, the government policies and measures taken to confront the challenges of the region and its developments since the events of October 7, 2023, and he also indicated that he explained the reasons for amending the Federal General Budget Law.
Al-Sudani also reviewed, according to his media office, a summary of the government program, its implementation rates, and the achieved targets of government priorities.
Also, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning Mohammed Tamim, and Minister of Interior Abdul Amir Al-Shammari presented a briefing on foreign policies and government measures to confront all challenges and the progress of implementing the government program, during the hosting session.
