Amending the Election Law... a hot issue facing the next legislative session

Information/Report..
The democratic process that the political arena has been experiencing since 2003 has witnessed a lot of political and popular controversy, and with the approach of each new electoral cycle, crises and disputes erupt between the political forces, and with the proposal to hold new elections, it is likely that they will be at the end of 2025 or the beginning of the following year, although this has not been officially determined except for the proposal submitted by the presidency of the republic regarding amending the electoral law.
The question is, are we facing a new hot issue during the next legislative session related to amending the elections law, especially since the movements behind the scenes are continuing with talks about the mechanism and form of the next elections law during unannounced meetings and gatherings?

The Al-Sudani government, as we have received information from political associates, does not want any amendment to the current law and will keep it because any amendment is not in the interest of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.
Opinions and orientations regarding amending the law differed from one bloc to another according to their interests. The large powers seek to change it, while the small powers consider the law of multiple electoral districts to guarantee their presence within the parliament dome and perhaps expand the number of their seats.
The leader of the State of Law Coalition, former MP Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, confirms that most of the political forces are in favor of amending the election law that was sent by the presidency of the republic, making the percentage 20% for the highest votes and 80% according to the Saint-Lague law, whether 1.7 or 1.9, and leaving it to the agreement of the political blocs.

Jaafar said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, "The proposal to amend the election law was sent by the presidency of the republic and was not a proposal by the State of Law Coalition as some are promoting, but we are in favor of this proposal because it will open the way for independents and small parties to reach the parliament dome," explaining that "the government is not in favor of this approach and prefers to keep the current law because it serves Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani."
He added, "The proposal of the presidency of the republic stipulates that the percentage of 20% be for the highest votes and 80% according to the Saint-Lague law, whether 1.7 or 1.9, and it is left to the agreement of the political blocs," noting that the majority of political forces are in favor of the law proposal.
As for the independent representative, the representative considered the call to change the electoral law for the next session a negative message and a lack of confidence among the street towards all political forces, indicating that maintaining one electoral law will contribute to the process of political stability in our country.
Al-Gharabi said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, "The political forces that claim democracy are supposed to settle on one electoral law and not resort to amending the law in every electoral cycle, because that sends a negative message to the Iraqi street and creates a state of lack of confidence among the people in the political parties and forces."
He added that "the call to amend the electoral law certainly suggests serving the big parties and specific parties in order to remain dominant over fateful and fundamental decisions," indicating that "maintaining a single electoral law will contribute to the process of political stability in our country and contribute to developing and activating progress in all political, economic, service and other fields."
It is noteworthy that the House of Representatives voted during its session held on the 27th of last August on the third amendment to the House of Representatives, Provincial and District Councils Elections Law No. (12) of 2018. End / 25 AD
