On Thursday, the leader of “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham,” Abu Muhammad al-Julani, sent a message to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, in which he confirmed that the Syrian armed factions have no intention of threatening Iraq’s security. While he indicated his desire to build bridges of political and economic relations with Baghdad, he called for preventing the Popular Mobilization Forces from participating in the events taking place in his country.
Al-Jolani said in a video clip, “Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and a number of Iraqi politicians are afraid of what is happening in Syria, and I assure them that we have no intention of harming Iraq’s security.”
Al-Julani urged the Iraqi Prime Minister to distance himself from what is happening in Syria and not to allow Popular Mobilization Forces to intervene in Syria. He stressed that "the ongoing confrontations in northern Syria will not extend to Iraqi territory."
Al-Jolani, who is wanted by the US, considered that “the conquest of Hama is a conquest in which there is no revenge.”
These statements come as the Syrian army announced that its military units “have redeployed and repositioned outside the city of Hama,” less than a week after Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city, fell into the hands of the factions as well.
Although the Iraqi political and security authorities have confirmed more than once recently that the Iraqi-Syrian border is under control, denying the entry of any fighters, especially from the Popular Mobilization Forces, into Syria.
The Popular Mobilization Forces also officially denied involvement in the ongoing confrontations or crossing into Syria.
Over the past years, Iran has sent thousands of Iraqi fighters and other armed Shiite militias, including the Lebanese Hezbollah, to Syrian territory, contributing with Russia’s air force to enable Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to regain most of the territory previously controlled by armed factions, in addition to the “ISIS” organization.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also recently reiterated that what it called the “Axis of Resistance” would support the Syrian army, adding that its military advisers would remain in Syria at the government’s request.
It is noteworthy that Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied armed factions launched a surprise attack on Aleppo last week, and took control of the entire city, and today they have penetrated into the heart of Hama, which is a strategic city, as it is 200 km away from Damascus, or about two and a half hours from the capital.
