Shafaq News/ Informed political sources revealed, on Saturday, that the head of the "Sovereignty" coalition, the Sunni leader Khamis al-Khanjar, has undertaken an undeclared political movement to prevent Iraq, "government and blocs", from supporting the Assad regime "in any way."
The sources told Shafaq News Agency, "Al-Khanjar has been leading a broad political movement for days to convince active Iraqi political blocs that Iraq should be neutral towards the Syrian crisis and not interfere to support the regime in any way. Al-Khanjar informed the leaders of Shiite and Kurdish political forces of the importance of prioritizing the Iraqi interest and not pushing the country to be at the forefront of supporting the regime."
The sources added that "Al-Khanjar's movement resulted in a change in the convictions of various Shiite forces regarding the issue of supporting the regime or involving factions in fighting with it. The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, also moved to reduce his enthusiasm towards the course of events in Syria, and for Baghdad to play the role of host for the regional parties concerned with the Syrian file, and not a party to any escalation pushed by Iran or the Syrian regime."
At the end of last November, armed factions, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra), invaded villages and towns in Aleppo province controlled by the Syrian government, continuing their advance and imposing their control over the province as well as other large areas in Syria.
In late 2016, Syrian army forces, backed by Russia, Iran and loyalist armed factions in the region, recaptured the entire city of Aleppo, and opposition fighters agreed to withdraw after months of bombardment and siege in a battle that turned the tide against the opposition.
Iraq fears the return of the mid-2014 scenario, when ISIS was able to control areas estimated at a third of the country, against the backdrop of the extension of the conflict in Syria between the regime and the opposition factions.
The armed organizations opposed to Assad had called on the Iraqi government not to engage in the developments taking place in Syria, and that they would form a government of institutions if the regime was toppled, but Baghdad rejected those calls and said that it does not deal with terrorist groups.
