The Ministry of Trade confirmed that the Syrian crisis will not affect the Iraqi economy and food security.
According to the official agency, the ministry’s spokesman, Mohammed Hanoun, said, “The first task of the government since its formation is to provide food security requirements for citizens by relying on large imports of food basket items and marketing large quantities of local wheat,” noting that “record numbers have been achieved in wheat production, which reached 6 million and 300 thousand tons, and there is a large stock of up to 3 million tons in addition to the presence of large quantities of food basket items.”
He added that "at the level of local markets, there was a plan to diversify the import of food from all neighboring countries," noting that "the local markets, despite the Syrian crisis, are witnessing great food stability, and do not suffer from any shortage of food, and the materials that citizens need enter the country from all sources with high fluidity."
He continued that "the government procedures through the Ministry of Trade and the Food Basket are proceeding towards securing food," indicating that "among the government procedures to provide food is the opening of a (hypermarket) in the Al-Bayaa area, and six other centers will be opened soon to support citizens with food at competitive prices."
Hanoun stressed that "the crisis in Syria will not affect the Iraqi economy, nor food security, and Iraq will not be affected by the food products produced in Syria due to the reliance on diversified sources of import for food products."
