The Ministry of Transport is preparing to implement public transport and rapid bus projects and modernize railway lines in Baghdad, during the coming year, in coordination with the World Bank and specialized international companies.
The director of the ministry’s media office, Maitham Al-Safi, told Al-Sabah that his ministry is preparing to implement public transportation and rapid bus projects in Baghdad during the coming year, to be the start of integrated plans to improve the transportation situation in the country and solve traffic congestion and bottlenecks in it, indicating that it is considered one of the environmentally friendly projects, which will contribute to reducing harmful gas emissions and improving air quality, in addition to increasing commercial and tourism activity in the served areas, which will enhance the local economy.
He pointed out that the public transport project will be implemented in cooperation with the World Bank, ensuring the provision of sustainable solutions to improve the transport network within the capital and meet the needs of citizens, while confirming at the same time the operation of 42 lines out of 72 lines that will be completed during the coming year as well.
Al-Safi explained that the development road project will also witness the launch of the first phase, which includes the preparation of a technical and economic feasibility study, which will achieve an important addition to all the governorates through which it passes, as it includes advanced means of transportation, industrial, residential and tourist cities, in addition to completing the design work to rehabilitate, modernize and develop the current national railway network according to the latest international designs and work to secure its connection to the Grand Faw Port, indicating that many European countries and international companies have expressed their desire to participate in this road project due to its great importance in the global transportation map and reducing the costs of transporting goods, and because it represents a great opportunity to attract companies specialized in this field.
