Baghdad Municipality: 33 companies compete to expand the capital’s sewers

33 companies are competing to implement two strategic projects that aim to double the capacity of rainwater and sewage in the capital to reach 1.6 million cubic meters per day, and to filter it initially before diverting it to the Tigris River.
The Director of the Sewerage Department in the Secretariat, Eng. Mahmoud Aziz, told Al-Sabah: The department obtained, within its plan for the coming year and based on preserving the environment and improving the sanitation situation, the approval of the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Planning to include two new projects that contribute to reducing the rate of pollution and absorbing the largest possible quantities of sewage and rainwater and filtering them initially before releasing them into the Tigris River.
He added that 33 local and foreign companies are competing to implement the two projects that will be referred for implementation early next year, on both sides of Karkh and Rusafa, to increase the quantities of sewage and rainwater that are currently 855 thousand m3 per day.
Aziz explained that a treatment plant will be established to expand the Al-Karkh Al-Buaitha sewage project, which currently operates at a capacity of 405 m3/day. This project will be parallel to the old one currently in place. The Police Canal project, which currently operates at a capacity of 405,000 m3/day, will also be expanded.
