Agriculture: Signing a contract with FAO to use advanced technologies

The Ministry of Agriculture has signed a contract with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to implement projects to combat climate change in desert areas using new technologies applied for the first time in the country.
The Director General of the Forestry and Combating Desertification Department at the Ministry, Dr. Bassam Kanaan Abdul Jabbar, said in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: His ministry has concluded a contract with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to implement development projects aimed at confronting climate changes occurring globally in the country’s desert regions, using new technologies applied for the first time in the country.
He explained that the contract includes the use of a new technology to stabilize sand dunes, which will be applied for the first time in the country, specifically in the desert of Dhi Qar Governorate, by planting a seedling placed inside a water container containing 10 to 15 liters of water and connected to a wick that reaches the roots of the plant, whose mission is to gradually provide it with water. When the plant reaches the age of one year, its roots reach the groundwater and thus the box is raised, noting that the new technology requires leveling the ground, continuous maintenance and cleaning of the container and avoiding rust. Abdul Jabbar pointed out that his ministry has contracts with an international organization, the World Food Organization, which took the initiative to equip the department with a number of containers aimed at confronting climate change, and they were distributed between the Desert Oases Project in Anbar Governorate, and the Sand Dunes Project in Baiji in Salah al-Din Governorate, in addition to Al-Fajr District in Dhi Qar Governorate. The project will be implemented in the coming short period in cooperation with the organization's experts to train the working staff on how to use and sustain them, and provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge of water technology.
In the same context, he stated that cooperation with the Arab Center (ACSAD) is activated by equipping projects with supplies, in addition to equipping them with drip irrigation systems, in addition to providing a well for irrigation, maintaining fields, as well as rehabilitating stations and nurseries, with the provision of thousands of trees, as well as enhancing cooperation with international donor organizations to implement projects, and developing the capabilities of workers in the agricultural and environmental sectors.
