Moves to improve the investment environment and implement import policy

The Minister of Trade, Athir Dawood Al-Ghariri, chaired yesterday, Sunday, the third session of the Committee of Diwani Order No. 37 of 2024 regarding the implementation of the import policy and executive procedures, while announcing the government's keenness to strengthen economic, trade and investment relations with the Republic of Greece.
A statement by the Ministry of Trade, a copy of which was received by "Al-Sabah", stated that "a number of topics were discussed during the meeting, including improving the investment environment by supporting the export of petroleum industrial products, regulating import trade and addressing obstacles to the work of the private sector, in addition to other topics."
The statement indicated that "views were exchanged on the measures taken on these topics by the concerned authorities, issuing recommendations and including them in the minutes of the session and submitting them to the Ministerial Council for the Economy for the purpose of approving them in a manner that serves the country's economic vision.
" Al-Ghariri stressed during the meeting "the necessity of taking appropriate decisions to draw up and implement the import policy based on a comprehensive and accurate economic vision that serves the country's economy, the consumer and the market in a manner consistent with the requirements of the current stage." He pointed
out that "government efforts are directed towards supporting all sectors, protecting the producer and consumer, supporting the private sector and preventing the policy of dumping goods in the Iraqi market."
The Minister of Trade also met yesterday, Sunday, with the Secretary General of International Economic Relations at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dimitris Skalkos, and the Greek Ambassador to Iraq.
During the meeting, the Minister stressed the Iraqi government's keenness to strengthen economic, trade and investment relations with the Republic of Greece and to accelerate the activation of the work of the joint committee, which last met 24 years ago, in addition to the possibility of increasing the volume of trade exchange between the two friendly countries.
He said: "The Iraqi government has taken practical and rapid steps to improve the business environment within Iraq by resolving many measures, including reforming laws and legislation, the percentage of participation of private companies, intellectual property, law and trade, which are pending approval and legislation by the Iraqi Council of Representatives, in addition to its decisions to localize industries within Iraq with the granting of privileges."
The Minister of Trade pointed out that "Iraq has great and promising opportunities in the labor and investment market, and in all fields, and the Greek side is invited to exploit these opportunities and enter the Iraqi market."
During the meeting, Al-Ghariri invited his Greek counterpart to visit Iraq next year to raise and discuss common files that serve the interests of the two countries.
For his part, the Secretary General for International Economic Relations at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed his government's keenness to cooperate with Iraq and develop its relations as an important strategic partner in the Asian continent.
He pointed out that "there are areas through which new horizons for cooperation can be opened, including the development of direct flights and investments in the field of transportation, participation in the Development Road Project, in addition to reconstruction and building materials, pharmaceuticals and food, education and other commercial activities."
