Member of Parliament Kazem Al-Fayyadh announced that controversial laws in the Council would be postponed until the beginning of the new year due to the ongoing disagreements over them.
Al-Fayadh said, “Disagreements are still ongoing regarding controversial laws, which is what led to postponing them until the beginning of the new year after the end of the extension period for the legislative term, as Parliament will enter its legislative recess.”
He added, "Voting on these laws requires more dialogue between the blocs and political parties in order to reach understandings regarding them before presenting them for a vote without prior agreement, as this disrupts the holding of House of Representatives sessions."
MP Ahmed Al-Sharmani revealed on Tuesday a political trend to postpone controversial laws until after the legislative holiday due to the ongoing disputes over them.
Al-Sharmani said, “There is a political trend by some political blocs and parties to postpone controversial laws (general amnesty, personal status, Kirkuk real estate) until after the legislative holiday due to disagreements over them.”
He added, "Yesterday's session was disrupted due to the quorum being broken, and today's session was also disrupted by agreement of certain blocs, which led to the session being postponed until further notice."
Al-Sharmani explained that “these laws are still the subject of intense disagreement between the blocs and parties, and have greatly affected the holding of parliament sessions,” noting that “postponing them to the beginning of next year aims to give those parties enough time for dialogue and understanding with the aim of voting on them at the beginning of the new legislative term.”
Disagreements between parliamentary blocs prevented the passage of controversial laws during recent parliamentary sessions, most notably amending the general amnesty law, the personal status law, and returning properties to their owners.
