    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Political researcher Nizar Haidar commented on Tuesday (December 10, 2024) on the position that Iraq should take after the change in Syria, while urging the Iraqi government not to interfere in Syrian affairs in any way.
Haider told Baghdad Today, "Caution must prevail in Iraq, and the Iraqi government did well when it achieved remarkable success in protecting its borders with Syria during the past few days, which witnessed the dramatic transformations that ended with the overthrow of the political regime in Damascus."
He added, "Political leaders and faction leaders accused the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of contributing to the decision to fortify the borders in destroying the theory of the unity of the arenas, but bearing such false accusations is much less harmful than if Iraq had been forced to get involved in Syria."
He pointed out that "it is no secret that Baghdad was subjected to enormous pressure from its eastern neighbor, Tehran, to engage in defending the regime that fell in Damascus, whether directly, which is what its foreign minister spoke about during his visit to Baghdad."
Haidar pointed out that "in response to this pressure came the position of Mr. Muqtada al-Sadr and then the position of former Prime Minister Mr. al-Abadi, who warned against the consequences of involving Iraq and dragging it into the Syrian arena when they called for the predominance of reason, wisdom and national interests in dealing with events."
He explained that "this position and all the positions issued by wise and patriotic people are what strengthened the hand of the Sudanese Prime Minister, enabling him to confront all the pressures."
He added, "Although things in Syria are now proceeding cautiously, it is wrong to be reassured about them," adding, "There is a vast distance between hopes and reality on the ground. We hope that things will proceed and continue as they are now without serious problems."
Haidar concluded his speech by saying: “Iraq must remain cautious and watch to comprehend developments, before taking any serious step and without interfering in Syrian affairs in any way.”
The aftershocks of the Assad earthquake
Political science professor Khaled Al-Ardawi also warns of major repercussions on Iraq after the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in Syria, while confirming that the Iranian project has received a painful blow.
Al-Ardawi told Baghdad Today yesterday, Monday (December 9, 2024), that “it is not possible to determine now the impact of Assad’s fall on Iraq, as it is still early and depends on the nature of developments in the Syrian arena and the positions of the new regime on Iraq.”
He added, "It is certain that this major event will have repercussions on Iraq and the region in general. The Iranian political Islam project has received a severe blow, and will lose much of its popular legitimacy. If things go smoothly until the next elections, the Iraqi forces affiliated with this project will be exposed to a major electoral loss that will move them from the decision-making center in Baghdad to its margins."
The professor of political science said, "This event may push some Iraqi political forces to take a decision to gradually sever ties with Tehran due to the latter's loss of regional and international credibility in supporting its allies. Therefore, Iraq is facing many major developments during the coming period."
