Minister of Justice: We have achieved achievements in the field of human rights

The Ministry of Justice confirmed that Iraq is moving confidently towards preserving and promoting human rights by fulfilling international obligations.
Minister of Justice Khaled Shawani said during the third forum of the National Human Rights Plan in Iraq (2021-2025), on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was attended by "Al-Sabah": "The ministry has achieved a number of achievements in the field of human rights, including the launch of the National Plan for the years 2021-2025, which charted the path of government institutions in this field, in order to develop the legislative system and announce national policies to promote and protect human rights in the country."
He added that "the plan included developing human rights formations in government institutions," indicating that "International Human Rights Day is an important international document for preserving human freedom, and perhaps the most important thing that represents the application of its standards is the declaration of victory over the "ISIS" gangs and the liberation of Mosul from those terrorist gangs."
Shawani explained that "the ministry was keen to implement all recommendations issued by international agreements," noting that "the country's accession to and participation in agreements related to human rights reflects the extent of commitment to applying their standards in all state institutions, in addition to commitment to all recommendations issued by these organizations upon the instructions of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Justice."
He continued, "One of the important achievements made by the Human Rights Department was represented by unifying the efforts of all ministries to issue reports on human rights and present them to international and local organizations. In addition, the ministry is working to develop and build institutional and individual capacities in this field." Confident steps towards development and construction with a curriculum focused on preserving and promoting rights, and this is what we find in the remarkable development in national policies, strategies and plans for protecting and promoting human rights in all fields, such as childcare, raising the level of education, caring for people with disabilities, combating poverty and violence against women, preventing diseases and family planning, in addition to combating corruption, managing diversity, combating extremism and terrorism, and paying attention to spatial development and administrative reform,” noting that “field visits are ongoing to the judicial departments in Baghdad and the governorates, to assess the level of services provided and remove obstacles in order to simplify procedures in the service of the Iraqi citizen.”
In turn, the Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry, Haider Abdul-Ilah, told Al-Sabah: “Commitment to implementing human rights standards contributes to building a democratic state in which justice and equality prevail, and thus all individuals in society can enjoy their rights and freedom without restriction.”
He added that “the most serious violation in the field of human rights was committed by the terrorist gangs of ISIS, which violated all freedoms, so the government was keen to re-implement all laws that came in accordance with the Human Rights Law in the areas that were under the control of the terrorist ISIS.”
