Shafaq News/ An Iraqi government official said on Wednesday that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's visit to Jordan comes within the framework of Iraq's movement regarding the situation in Syria.
The official told Shafaq News Agency: "Al-Sudani's visit focuses on coordinating Arab and regional positions and visions, especially in light of the rapid changes in the Syrian file and the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Today, Wednesday, Al-Sudani made an unannounced visit to Jordan, where he met with the King of the Kingdom, King Abdullah II, where they discussed current developments in the region and events in the Syrian arena.
A new scene is looming in Syria, Iraq’s neighbor, with the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the armed opposition factions announcing control over the country, after an attack that began quickly and lasted for 11 days, ending a 24-year rule and an era that lasted for about 6 decades.
Iraqi officials are concerned about the change in the Syrian scene, especially with the armed opposition factions controlling the reins of power, which include elements of extremist organizations such as the former "Al-Nusra Front" and others.
This is also linked to fears that the repercussions of the Syrian conflict will spread to Iraq, through the escalation of armed activity along the common border. This has prompted Iraq to deploy large military reinforcements.
The Iraqi authorities also fear that the fall of the Assad regime will lead to a security vacuum that extremist organizations may exploit to strengthen their influence in the region.
