The Abu Mohammed al-Julani group, known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which has taken control of the regime in Damascus, is approaching the Iraqi border.
The group announced its control of Deir ez-Zor and the Albukamal crossing with Iraq.
According to some reports, the “group” is heading towards “Al-Tanf”, the Iraqi-Syrian-Jordanian border triangle, which includes an American base.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani arrived in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on a surprise visit.
The government media office said in a statement yesterday that al-Sudani met with King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, and the most prominent discussion was about developments in Syria.
These developments come in the wake of visits by American officials to Baghdad, and talk by factions about a “sabotage room” for Iraq led by Britain.
Last Sunday morning, the Syrian opposition factions announced the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the “beginning of a new era” in Syria, after its forces entered the capital, Damascus, at dawn.
In contrast, Baghdad confirmed that the field developments in Syria “were surprising”, and strengthened fortifications on the border.
However, the Iraqi government said: “We have no intention of interfering in Syrian affairs,” according to the official government spokesman, Bassem Al-Awadi.
“Consulting with friends”
On Tuesday, Al-Sudani met in Baghdad with the commander of the US Central Command, General Michael Kurilla.
According to an official statement, the two sides discussed Iraq’s commitment to cooperating with the international coalition and the situation in Syria.
Al-Sudani said that Iraq will follow the developments in Syria, and “the credibility of actions, not words.”
Al-Julani has repeatedly called on Baghdad to open new relations, and news leaked about a contact between the two parties through Turkish mediation.
Iraq raised the flag of the new regime that took control of Damascus over the Syrian embassy building in Baghdad.
On the same day as the US military commander, a high-ranking delegation from the US State Department visited Baghdad.
The delegation, which included assistants and advisors to the US Secretary of State, met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, and the meeting focused on the Syrian situation.
Hussein stressed, according to the statement, “Iraq’s keenness to consult with friends in Washington about the current stage and the future of Syria.”
On Tuesday, the “al-Julani” group formed an interim government in Syria that will continue to operate until March 2025.
In return, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) withdrew from Albukamal, and the “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham” factions replaced them at the border crossing on Tuesday evening, according to the Syrian Observatory.
Arab media outlets indicated that controlling Deir Ezzor opens the way for the factions to advance towards other large areas, reaching “al-Tanf.
” “Closing the gaps”
There is fear in Iraq of the geography of the Syrian events expanding, or the movement of ISIS sleeper cells.
On the seventh anniversary of the liberation of Iraq from the organization, Hadi al-Amiri, leader of the Badr Organization, stressed the need to “closing the gaps” during a tour with military leaders between Kirkuk and Salah al-Din.
Al-Amiri had previously called on the government to take action and not wait for developments in the situation in Syria.
Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, had adopted a similar position to al-Ameri, before suddenly changing his mind and supporting “change in Syria,” according to a tweet he posted on the “X” platform.
On the other hand, the al-Nujaba Movement, which is part of what is known as the “Iraqi resistance,” believed that there were international arrangements to transfer the Syrian scene to Iraq.
The movement claimed in a statement that what happened in Syria took place through “an operations room in Turkey to manage the destruction with British planning and intelligence participation from NATO and the Zionist entity.”
It added that “the same room is currently working to sabotage Iraq, but under British leadership, and this time from within Baghdad and not from outside the borders.”
The faction criticized what it described as “exaggerated interest” in the Iraqi borders, at the expense of focusing on the “internal danger,” according to the statement.
Tehran also believes that there is an international agreement that includes Israel and the United States, with the support of a third regional state that was not explicitly mentioned, according to a speech by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei yesterday.
In this context, another faction in the so-called “Iraqi Resistance”, the “Hezbollah Brigades”, announced that it is monitoring the situation in Syria and waiting for the emergence of parties with which it can reach an understanding to achieve a national balance in the country.
The brigades’ statement indicated that there is “support from two countries” for the events in Syria, without explicitly revealing them.
The faction confirmed that “Al-Nusra” and “ISIS” are terrorist organizations, “despite their attempts to pretend to be humane in front of the cameras”.
Coercion and containment
Meanwhile, Ahmed Al-Yasiri, a political researcher residing in Australia, believes that Iraq is affected by the situation in Syria, and there are fears of the return of “ISIS”.
Al-Yasiri said in an interview with Al-Mada newspaper that “releasing prisoners in Syria is a frightening matter. Among those released are more than 2,500 ISIS prisoners, most of whom are leaders.”
He added that “Iraq will be forced to deal with the Al-Julani government, and Israel will begin to change in Iraq from Syria, especially after the factions’ defeat and withdrawal.”
Al-Yasiri, head of the Arab-Australian Center for Strategic Studies, believes that Iraq has two options after what happened in Syria: either control the rhythm of these groups, or reduce Iranian influence, otherwise it may become a target for Israel.
He said: “Everything that happens in Syria will happen in Iraq quickly and suddenly. After the success of the United States and Israel in Syria and Lebanon, it will be Baghdad’s turn.”
He expected that “what will happen in Iraq will not necessarily be the fall of the regime, but rather the fall of Iranian symbols inside.”
He added that in the coming stage, the United States “will subjugate the government and encircle the factions.”
