The Civil Registry Department in Damascus announced that the Syrian nationality will be revoked for approximately 700,000 people from Iraq and Iran who obtained Syrian nationality during the “Syrian revolution,” according to Syrian media.
The administration stated in an official statement today that: “These people obtained citizenship through exceptional procedures in the period following the start of the popular movement in Syria against the ousted Assad regime. It confirmed that this decision will become effective as of next Sunday, as these nationalities will be considered null and void as of this date.”
This decision comes at a sensitive time for the new Syrian authorities.
Observers believe that granting citizenship to citizens of countries such as Iran and Iraq was part of attempts to bolster political and military support for President Bashar al-Assad's government during the revolution.
On Sunday, December 8, 2024, the Syrian opposition factions announced on Syrian television the fall of the Assad regime, saying in a statement, “Damascus has been liberated and the Assad regime has fallen.”
